Song of the Day - Seeing Through Shadows by Loco Dice

In the world of Techno (and music in general), there are forces that work within the industry that lend themselves to music that has a bit of immediacy. You'll seem from the first time you look at the waveform for a track a bit of predictability in it. A quick intro followed by the settling of the groove and then two breakdowns with the second normally being the track at it's most full on. Its effective, but it makes for some predicability in a set and it makes finding tracks that break that structure even more exciting.

These are the thoughts that come to mind when hearing Loco Dice's Seeing Through Shadows. Some tracks take a while to unfold, but this song feels like something a bit more deliberate. It's like listening to an incredible 5 minute playful tease before the song decides to open up the floodgates and introduce the hi-hats that give the track it's energy. Still, it's that playful synth line that runs through the track that makes it memorable. There is just something fun and playful about the way it rolls along giving that heady vibe that has the added benefit of cooling off the dancefloor. While released by Loco Dice, the song has production touches of Martin Buttrich all over it, bringing his deft hand for mixing and sound design into the fold in a way that would become clear as he emerged from producing artists like Loco Dice and Timo Maas into his solo work. This is one of the brightest spots of Hawtin's Minus label and one I'm happy to share today.
