Do you think it is right teaching children to practice a religious belief system before the age of adulthood?

This is an interesting and relevant question. I don't really engage or post about religion anymore, as I see religion as something that falls away when we arrive at a well-educated population and a society, where your needs are met and therefore you do not have anything to pray for.

Anyway, I believe that the majority of religious beliefs out there, should not be indoctrinated into kids. I guess you could say that in the worst case it could be considered child abuse(I have seen this personally) and in the best case it might have a positive influence in some areas(for example what e call kindness and compassion, which can and are both taught just as easily without any divine influence).

The vast majority of people that would be exposed to a religious book such as the Bible, Torah or Koran when they were 18 or 20 years old for the first time, and that would be in their education taught how the world works with observable, measurable experiments, would consider such writing completely fictional. At that time, they could decide for themselves if they want to engage in the practices presented in these holy books.

I had the great fortune of not being brought up in a religious environment and I have not read any kind of religious text before the age of 31 and I have experienced this first hand. I could not believe the number of myths, misinterpretations, fictional scenarios, laws of physics broken and inconsistencies just between the parts of the same book. I was completely blown away, that adults believe such stories. At that time I didn't know much of indoctrination and conditioning and so it was a total shock.

The problem is not one person believing in God and all these fictional stories, the problem becomes when people in positions of power and decision making, act on such obsolete information and negatively influence next generations. And unfortunately, religion is still pretty strong in that regard - although the % of religious people in the world is slowly dropping...but not fast enough yet.
