The Evil Eye

in #religion6 years ago (edited)

The Evil Eye (or as I prefer Oculus Malus), is a piece of mythology and symbolism that is common throughout the middle east. The Evil Eye predates all Abrahamic religions however, the Evil Eye has since been incorporated into Judaism and Islam.
The Evil Eye represents the dangers of the ego. The Eye works against those who receive excessive or unwarranted praise. The Evil Eye would lead to your demise when it glared at you. The Evil Eye also refers to a situation when someone is looking at someone else with a negative intent such as jealousy, anger, or even lust.

The eyes are the most powerful part of the body in Syrian culture. This reflects the belief of the eyes emitting the most energy out of the body. This is also reflected in Arabic music with the use of many eye related metaphors, and the rare use of direct eye contact.
There are ways of protection against the Evil Eye. The most common is the Hamsa. The Hamsa represents the hand of God and protects its wearer from negativity and ensures privacy and wards off other low vibrational energies. Oher methods include incense, wearing a cross, and the use of herbs (especially salt an garlic).
