Is Sacrificing Goats An Essential Ritual For Celebrating Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) In Islam?

in #religion6 years ago

In India, slaughter of animals like goats and sheep are illegal if performed outside the licensed abattoir. For last couple of years, there has been a controversy of allowing the slaughter of goats on the occasion of Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) outside slaughterhouses in Mumbai. Some residents of a Malabar Hill apartment had asked Court to restrain the slaughter of goats in the premises of their housing society. Unfortunately the Bombay High Court rejected this plea saying that everyone has right to perform their religion.

After this order; last year, local authority started giving online permissions for sacrificing animals on Bakrid. They even prepared a mobile app for seeking instant permission. For three days, an exception is made to slaughter animals only in licensed abattoirs.

I don't know much about Islam. I've heard many interpretations of their scriptures which states this practice of sacrificing an animal as a distorted version and a festival can be very well celebrated without the sacrifice of any sentient life.

I know many of my followers from different parts of the world here follow Islam. I would like your input on this matter.

  • Is sacrifice of a sentient life an essential practice for celebrating Eid al-Adha)?
  • Do you think someone's blood can please his own Creator?

Today, one of my friends from Maharashtra called me and updated me over his preparations to file a law suit for stopping this practice. He has also initiated an online signature petition today, which I signed:

https://www.change.org/p/municipal-commissioner-of-mumbai-bmc-stop-animal-sacrifice

  • Would you too like to support and sign this petition?
  • Or is this against the religious principles of Islam?

In fact some people have objected to submit personal information and ID proofs just for acquiring license for sacrificing the animal at their place. They say, such things will instil unnecessary fear in their community.

Who do you think is right and who is at fault?
Do enlighten me on this matter.

Thanks a lot!

In U.P. , this is completely restricted to slought the goat outside. Very strict rules made by Yogi government in U.P. to save animals from slaughter.
Many warrant are issued by government to arrest people who slaughting outside and fined them.
But I think this is not the complete work , a lot of work is remain to do. We should try to save goats from slaughing on Eid. Then this rule is worked out clearly.

Good to hear this.
Yes, stopping slaughter outside licensed slaughterhouses won't help in eliminating slaughter of goats entirely. But it will make it harder, which may compel some to look for alternative ways to celebrate Bakrid.

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:
