What Should Humans Eat?

in #religion6 years ago (edited)

Today, world is divided on what we should eat and what we shouldn't, how to eat and when to eat. Science, religions, traditions, tastes, health, spirituality, nutrition, morality, scriptures, culture and everything comes into play for our choices. The debate about our food has no end. Everyone has his/her own arguments and logic for his/her choice. But what is right and what is wrong has never been resolved until today.

In the following "edited / assembled" video, the most commonly argued points on eating habits of Muslims & Hindus has been put up between Dr. Zakir Naik and the Indian Mystic, Sadhguru:

After watching this video, please let me know your opinion on it:

  • Which of these arguments you consider reasonable for our consideration?
  • Do you agree with any of these?
  • Are both of these wrong? Then what's truth according to you?
Sort:

In our country we have a so called 5 item to eat/drink thing. I'm not sure how it exactly works by heart. But you should eat every day something from each or is 5 categories. I think the categories are:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • proteins like milk
  • meat or fish
  • nuts
  • last one I forgot

Interesting. Every region has some traditions that people keep following until they find something better. The thing to be noted is that traditions are not set in stone but are constantly evolving with the evolution of humans and our own societies.

Unfortunately, we have a strong resistance towards any change and want to maintain status quo in every respect. But progress demands some changes over time.

I am a man of reason, so I am going to say this: I like to eat meat mostly for the taste, but I do believe that the proportions really are important here. Meat is very easy to consume too much off.

The main problem I see is with the actual production being bad for both quality of the meat and towards the animals being mass produced just to be put to slaughter.

The worst offensive though is how this industry affects the ecology.

Good to know that you're aware of the adverse impacts of mass production of meat on our ecology while consuming meat. I can understand the taste as our conditioning and the way we are raised. However, everything has got some taste if we know to enjoy it and to my understandings, vegetation has got the most wonderful of tastes. In fact, today, several recipes have been developed to mimic the exact taste of meat.

Also, taste & deliciousness is related to our state of mind and hunger levels. In my country every region has its own traditional delicacies. The regional people enjoy those delicacies a lot but some outsiders just can't take it. So perhaps, we actually develop our tastes for something over a period of time and that can be easily altered too, as per our wishes.

To me the best is eat according to your health status

That's a good take but who will tell you what's good during a specific health status and on what basis?

Also, taste & deliciousness is related to our state of mind and hunger levels.

I agree with you in this but I want to annex that the culture is part of it too, there are substitutes for several foods, in some cases more delicious than the originals, everything is a matter of mentalizing.

Yeah, I agree, culture plays an important role in developing our tastes since our childhood.

Honestly eat what your momma tells you to eat :)

Ha ha ha! Why not what your body tells you to?

We should eat what is healthy for us. That's all.

And who decides what's healthy for you? Now don't tell me Science of nutrition, it hardly knows anything!

We should eat what-ever we want to eat. We are on top of the food chain for a reason.

No Cannibalism --- Anything else is fine.

Why not cannibalism?

Well being at the top of food chain is a misnomer. Check this:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexberezow/2013/12/03/humans-arent-at-the-top-of-the-food-chain/

We should consciously eat whatever is edible & healthy in a holistic sense.

We would have to kill each other if we were going to turn to cannibalism. I suppose it would solve the over-population problem.

Doesn't this mean we shouldn't be eating whatever we want?

We eat what we want aside from our own species/

You want to exclude your own species because you are concerned for your own life. Similarly, every sentient creature is concerned for his or her life too. The "strong can eat weak" argument gets to the point of cannibalism and hence we become speciesist. The question is why should we discriminate on the basis of species when we oppose discrimination on the basis of caste, race, colour & gender?

I never said I fear for my own life as my argument against cannibalism. You came to that conclusion yourself. Anything that is going to be killed and eaten should be concerned for their lives when around those things that will eat them.

Okay, so are you talking about calories? Because prions can be avoided by sparing the part called brain.

Well, plant-based sources like cereals, beans and nuts have way more calories than animal based products. Plants are the primary producer of food so, I think, we can get more nutrients while consuming directly from source. But I don't think our choices are actually based on calories. Are they?

I posted a video that had multiple reasons as to why cannibalism is a bad Idea. Lack of calories was just one aspect of that video.

  • Our choices are based on many things.... calories being one of them .. taste another ... our surroundings another and so on.

Well the video is about arguments for and against consumption of meat by humans between two different spiritual personalities. I guess, you can download it over a slow connection for a smooth viewing later.

@xyzashu has set 1.050 SBD bounty on this post! logo_for-light-bg_1000.png
What is a bounty exactly?

A bounty is money sent to a post to be distributed to the users commenting on it. It provides a way to reward users directly and works in addition to the steem/sbd they receive from the blockchain. It works independently of SteemPower.

You create a bounty by sending any amount of sbd/steem to @steem-bounty together with a post-url in the memo.

How can I earn a bounty Users are then competing for the bounty by writing their answers to the post in comments that will achieve upvotes from the community and especially the bounty creator. The money of the bounty gets distributed to all top level comments of the post at the same time when the post is paid out (7 Days after it was written). How much everyone gets depends on the votes the comments received. The sender of the bounties votes are weighted higher so that she decideds where 80% of the bounty money goes and all other votes determine the rest.

@steem-bounty does all of this for you automatically. You can use this service to automatically pay out a challenge, ask a hard question or simply to reward the people that interact with you.

Read more about how it works, even in different languages here.
