These words refer to the body of Christ given in death and his blood shed as a sacrifice on the cross. the bread represents the body and the wine its blood which was poured out to confirm the "new covenant" to eat the bread and drink the wine is to proclaim the acceptance of the benefits of the atoning death of Christ.
