Paul emphasizes the importance of marriage by declaring that the sexual act is, in fact, a duty; the husband must be available to his wife when she asks him to and, likewise, the wife when he asks her to.
It is more than an act of biological mating, the Bible calls it a "mystery", a privilege whereby two people, a man and a woman, become one flesh, the privilege is abused when the man and the woman they are not married and have contact; then, something that according to the purpose of God should bring us a blessing, becomes a cause of judgment
Marriage is the only place that God has provided for sexual union to occur, in this context, the sexual act becomes a powerful symbol of love between Christ and the church.
