Attractions of Rethymnon

Fortezza Fortress

The fortress of Fortezza was erected by the townspeople after the attack of the Turks in 1571, as the main defensive point of the city, now surrounded by a fortress wall, and rightly called the main attraction of the city. But against the Turkish siege the fortress did not survive, after which the Turks occupied it and erected in 1887 in front of the central gates Archaeological Museum, which later became one of the most interesting and visited places of the city. The Greeks managed to get into the fortress only in the 1920s after the so-called "Asia Minor catastrophe". In addition to these beautiful buildings, the city boasts many other attractions, including the Gate of Guora, the Center for Contemporary Art, the Cathedral, the Theater Erofili and the Church Museum. Rethymno managed to preserve its beauty of antiquity, the charm of identity, despite the rapid and active development.
