C64 Game Memories - Revisited 30+ Years later : Hyper Sports
There was a plethora of sports games on the C64 in the mid 80's, some remain classic and some were let's say not that great.
My favourites were Decathlon, Winter Games & Daley Thompsons Decathlon but Imagines title Hyper Sports is well up there for me.
It's a bit more limited in terms of events than those games but it was quite an eclectic mix of sports - you competed in Swimming, Skeet Shooting, Gymnastics, Archery, Triple Jump & Weight Lifting.
Thankfully Hyper Sports was a little more forgiving on your joystick than the aforementioned titles! It also had a different feel, much more arcadey, which made sense as it was a conversion rather than a new title. I always felt there was more incentive to reach a world record on Hyper Sports for some reason.
On the C64 version anyway, the title music was Chariots of Fire, and the name selection screen I think gives it that impression of an arcade conversion.
I like the progression system of Hyper Sports, which meant that as a single player it was always challenging. The game would loop round after you had finished all the sports but in a more difficult challenge. You 'lost' the game if you failed to qualify for an event and just doing so became an effort the further and longer you played.
A definite worthy addition to a classic C64 collection and still very playable today.
The Epyx "Games" series were alway my favorite sports games on the C64. I don't think I ever played Hyper Sports though.
World Games held it weight on the NES, but Winter Games suffered tremendously. Too bad Summer Games never got ported over.
