Pretty Boys Rule and A Winner Is Crowned! (Big Brother Canada 7 Review)
Every year, as a viewer, I want the Winner to be someone who represents the season well, someone for whom I've been rooting, someone who I feel that if I met them in real life we would get alone. Dane fits the bill in every aspect.
This year, the Pretty Boys ruled the house. They were a power alliance. Normally, I don't root for the dominating alliance, but these four guys were compelling, relatable, and showed true emotion. They were real, they were raw.
Adam formed the alliance, with this dream he had of dominating the game and getting to the end. He was a comp beast and had a great social game too. Anthony was the mastermind manipulator, never touched the block, he was the villain of the season. Mark was the awkward dude who wanted to make waves, was willing to go against the grain, even go against this alliance, but int he end, he stayed "loyal to the soil." And Dane had a strategic game, was a comp beast, and did some masterminding to remain safe and go after targets. He had it all.
It is the second time someone win by a unanimous vote. Dane is the second unanimous winner of BBCan. The first person was Kevin Martin in BBCan 5. And before Kevin, the first person to win unanimously in North-American Big Brother was Dan Gheesling. All by a jury with 7 members.
Dane was naturally goofy, and when he took out his prosthetic teeth, his lisp and goofy look amplified his goofy demeanor. I played down his intelligence, but he were always genuine and true to his real person. Not saying he never lied, but integrity on who you are as a person sometimes plays a big part in a game like this one. People perceived him as goofy and not that smart. The perception was a natural result from walking around without those 2 teeth most of the time. Frank asked me if Dane had a different persona without his teeth. Nope. Always himself. A fun goofy guy people can relate to, in the house and at home.
His social game gave him many people who were rooting for him even in the house, wanting to work with him, keep him safe and take his advice to heart. He hid from the house that he knew all the days and had a hidden study board. He threw competition, but was a comp beast and won a lot of various comps. As much the physical ones and the mental ones.
His best play in my opinion was when he was on the block to go home at final 5, Anthony told him he was voting him out. Mark was also on the block. A Pretty Boy was going home no matter what. Up until now they had ruled the house, gotten their targets out, convince whoever was Head of Household to target people that were beneficial for their alliance to target, unbeknownst to the other players. They were at times covert, but I never felt that Dane was a mass liar, he was never mean, and he was not a villain like Anthony. He was kind with a big heart. Butting another Pretty Boy broke his heart when he chose to do it in order to ensure that he would win at the end. Which is what got him the win.
But back to on the block, he convinced Anthony to keep him with his true genuine self. He showed him his study board and told him that Anthony needed him to win so they could evict Adam, so that they could make it to Final 2, like they had promised each other on Day 2. Anthony kept him, Dane won HoH, they evicted Adam, with tears and emotions of genuine love for each other. And Dane won the Final HoH on Finale night, winning Part 1 and Part 3 of the 3-part competition and took Anthony with him to sit at the end, true to his word. His answers to questions wasn't the best I've seen, but his final speech was on par.
The love these guys have for each other is akin to that of true brothers. It was inspiring to see. Dane is a well-rounded player, and thus a well-rounded winner. A well-deserving winner! Unanimous winner! He represents the season well. He is a Pretty Boy. When I think of BBCan7 and the winner and the season as a whole, I fell, yes, this is the kind of winner we want.
Arguments can be made that Dane is the best, or one of the best, Big Brother Canada winners. He is perhaps one of the top 10 winners of BB North-America, combining both Canada and US. It is rare to see someone win who is strategic, a comp beast and has a social game that is second to none. Usually the winner is one or the other, sometimes 2, but never all three vital aspects of the game.
By the way, the cinematography on this show is superb, especially on Finale night. Whoever their cinematographer is does an excellent job. This year the editing was much better than previous years too. BBCan is a baby compared to US, which is going into its 21st season this Summer. Big Brother Canada is getting better and better every year. The competitions are much better than the US ones, and they always have cinematics that stand out. Our host, Arisa Cox, is an awesome and dynamic host with great energy. I don't watch feeds, but the morning updates and podcasts I listen to fill in the gaps from live feeds and those are always fun. While the season as a whole was not always as interesting as some other seasons, I wholeheartedly enjoyed watching this alliance dominate and the finale was exciting and it was riveting.
Dane represent BBCan7 and is a top winner in my books. I good conclusion to a fun season with a well-deserving winner.
