"The Lincoln Lawyer" by Brad Furman - movie review

in #review6 years ago (edited)

Honestly, I do not remember when we did not have the chance to look at a decent judicial thriller. As if the endless mediocre Grissom screenings that managed to stumble Ontmann and Coppola's classmates led to a collapse of the genre (wondering how romantic comedies that are infinitely larger slopes are still curtailed), and Hollywood ceased to care about them. On top of that, I have also been disgusted with Grishum's books, some of which are devoid of qualities.

"The Lincoln Lawyer" is a worthy return to this overwhelming genre, and although it does not shine with originality or any other who knows what qualities, he reminds us that not everything in the modern judicial thriller is mediocrity. The film is a screening of Michael Connolly's one of the most popular (and worldwide) thriller writers, and is perhaps the best deviation of his typical purely criminal style. The film tells about a dozen cunning attorney, Mickey Holer, whose office is in the back of a Lincoln - because I have not read the book, I see no other reason (except the very practical in view of his frequent trips from client to customer) , except to illustrate the hero's street gossip - who sees a golden chance to make some money from a seemingly simple rape attack and attempted rape to defend a young and pretty playboy. I do not need to tell you what's going on. You watched hundreds of movies. Things are not what seems at first glance, the case is linked to previous Haller's cases, it is not clear who is innocent and who is blame, and of course, the career and, more importantly, the life of the family, friends, and Haller is in danger. The good thing about the whole thing is that this "surprise," which you all know happens before the end of the first third of the movie, where he moves from a pure mystery to a thriller where the main hero must show true qualities to survive in a rather complicated situation. Interestingly, it is precisely this part of the pure "courtroom" drama and it is definitely happening. Only moments with the moral dimensions of the problem are slightly irritating, but they are easily swallowed. The same is true of the very finale, which is not particularly plausible, but it is entertaining, but not emotionally satisfying.

One of the great trumps of the film is the actors. In most of these films, there is a tradition of star casting and "The Lincoln Attorney" is no exception. Ryan Phillips, John Leguizamo, Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, William H. Macy, Brian Creston, and Michael Penya. The star of the show, however, is called Matthew McConaughey, which is a personal surprise to me. I mean the agent, the manager who cares about his career, that made him take a two-year break from the big movie - because the situation around all the sordid romantic comedies before 2011 and the uninterrupted stripping off of a shirt that Hollywood he had started to become intolerant - and then returned to a role similar to the one that 15 years ago made him a real star, the one in Time to Kill. And we see after "The Lincoln Lawyer" how the career of McConaughey goes up. Undoubtedly, it has been McConaughey's one of his best roles. To sum up, "The Lincoln Lawyer" is far from the best representatives of the genre, but it is a worthy addition that stands out in the face of most of the similar experiences for the past 15 years. Roughly speaking, he is a representative of what we call "adult movies." Movies made for people over 25 years old who are not only interested in effects, explosions, sexy vampires, frenetic fitting and non-stop action. Movies for people willing to invest time in not so original but interesting stories that develop smoothly and calmly, without undue flare in any of the elements / departments of production.
