Amo ogni forma di intrattenimento che mi trasporti in un mondo del tutto nuovo, o anche semplicemente nel mondo di qualcun altro. Pertanto, amo soprattutto la letteratura ed il cinema, ma sono un’utente estremamente medio: non ho particolari competenze tecniche e non me ne preoccupo eccessivamente, le mie “competenze” discendono, semmai, unicamente dal fatto di aver letto e visto molte cose diverse. Apprezzo sia film più “impegnati” che blockbuster e non mi aspetto di applicare il medesimo metto di giudizio ad entrambe le tipologia.
Mi piace registrare la mia opinione sulle cose, quindi spesso scrivo recensioni su ciò che mi piace, ciò che non mi piace e ciò che risulta in ogni caso molto popolare. Le mie recensioni cinematografiche apparivano per lo più su FB, mentre le mie recensioni letterarie si trovano sul mio account Goodreads. D’ora in poi le pubblicherò anche qui.
Cerco sempre di mantenermi il più generica possibile, ma procedere con cautela.

THOR: RAGNAROK

Ho visto l’ultimo film di THOR la settimana scorsa con alcuni amici ed ammetto che le mie aspettative erano alte. I commenti di altri amici su FB andavano da

Thor Ragnarok è il più pazzesco stupidissimo fucking capolavoro supremo che io abbia mai visto al cinema! (G.B.)

Non andate a vedere il nuovo Thor con la vostra ragazza, onde evitare che vedendo il protagonista senza maglietta lei si chieda se “siete della stessa specie”. (C.V.)

Quindi ero estremamente carica. E non solo per i pettorali di Hemsworth, lo giuro: nemmeno mi piacciono, i biondi. Sono il tipo di ragazza a cui tendenzialmente piacciono gli antagonisti e per quanto riguarda il caso specifico di THOR ho una cotta sia per Loki che per Tom Hiddleston sin dal primo film. Ma ero comunque carica.
Immagino sia per questo che alla fine sono rimasta un po’ delusa. Non fraintendetemi, il film è molto divertente: ottimi effetti speciali e cinematografia generale, bellissimi costumi, buone performance ed una trama non insoddisfacente, con un finale lasciato volontariamente aperto in attesa del prossimo capitolo del MCU. Ne sono uscita soddisfatta, ma non tanto esaltata quanto i commenti degli amici mi avevano fatto sperare.
Nell’ambito del MCU (“Marvel Cinematic Universe”, per i non iniziati), THOR: RAGNAROK funge da prequel per il futuro incontro tra Avengers e Guardiani della Galassia, previsto per il prossimo anno con AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. E si vede. Sapevamo da tempo che gli Avengers e i Guardiani appartenevano al medesimo universo e che si sarebbero incontrati, prima o poi, ma fino ad ora Thor è l’unico Avenger ad averci mostrato mondi al di là della Terra ed in RAGNAROK ci proietta a gran velocità verso i Guardiani, specialmente dal punto di vista visuale. Aspettatevi un eccesso di colore ed una forte somiglianza ai due capitoli dei Guardiani, in questo film, e non stupitevi se a volte potrà sembrare che Thor stesso faccia uscire il suo Stalord interiore. Ma né la cinematografia né il copione passano mai del tutto a quella assurda ed esplosiva stravaganza che caratterizza i film dei Guardiani, mantenendosi piuttosto fedeli se non altro al mood del primo episodio. Il che, tutto sommato, è un bene.

Ciò premesso...

Tre cose che mi sono piaciute

• Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Ho premesso che ho una cotta per entrambi, e pure bella grossa. La continua incapacità di Loki di mantenersi fedele alla parte che ha scelto di sostenere comincia un po’ ad annoiare, ma adoro come riesce sempre e comunque a divincolarsi dalle situazioni peggiori ed apprezzo sempre e comunque gli abili affabulatori. Potrebbe sembrare strano che sia stato l’antagonista principale per ben due volte, ma sia ciononostante ancora in giro a fare il galletto e creare problemi. Ma è il Dio del Caos, dopotutto, quindi hanno senso sia la sua generale ambivalenza sia il continuare a tenerlo in gioco come “male necessario”. Hiddleston, d’altra parte, è un ottimo attore ed un grande fan Marvel, il che sicuramente non guasta. Loki era l’unica cosa che mi fosse veramente piaciuta in THOR: THE DARK WORLD e l’ho amato anche in questa occasione, quindi sicuramente spero rimanga nei paraggi il più a lungo possibile.

• Il cast stellare. Nell’ambito dei film di THOR, l’asticella è stata sicuramente posizionata molto in alto quanto è stato scritturato Anthony Hopkins per il ruolo di Odino, ma il livello si è mantenuto alto anche in seguito. Anche se non ho apprezzato le sue scene, Anthony Hopkins è pur sempre un Dio, letteralmente e figurativamente. Con Jeff Goldblum, un altro mio grande favorito, non si può sbagliare. È l’uomo giusto per qualsiasi lavoro: dategli un qualsiasi ruolo e lo renderà accattivante, esilarante e folle il giusto, il che, incidentalmente, è esattamente ciò che serviva al Gran Maestro. Ottima performance ed ottimo make up. Anche la performance di Cate Blanchett è eccellente, come prevedibile, e dà decisamente l’impressione di essersi divertita molto con il ruolo.

• Skurge (Karl Urban). È un personaggio secondario, ma ritengo che sia il copione che l’attore abbiano fatto un ottimo lavoro nel tratteggiarlo molto efficacemente. In ogni scena in cui compare si capisce immediatamente da un suo semplice sguardo cosa gli stia passando per la testa, pur non avendo familiarità col personaggio ed avendo, lo stesso, un numero assai limitato di battute. La sua indecisione tra il fare ciò che gli conviene e ciò che è giusto non è certo un tratto originale, ma mi è piaciuto il risultato finale e, soprattutto, il fatto che il personaggio sia comunque profondamente diverso da Loki, che potrebbe astrattamente essere animato dallo stesso conflitto (ma che in realtà di ciò che è giusto tendenzialmente se ne frega). Il look generale del personaggio, inoltre, è molto figo.

Due cose che... “meh”

• L’inizio. Come già detto, questo film funge da anticipazione del futuro incontro tra Avengers e Guardiani della Galassia nel prossimo capitolo del MCU (sul presupposto che BLACK PANTHER si riveli sostanzialmente slegato dalla trama generale), ma ho la sensazione che non fosse necessario che Thor imitasse continuamente Starlord, in particolare all’inizio. Non mi dispiace l’inizio in medias res. Non mi dispiace che lo scontro iniziale sembri il livello appena superato da mio moroso su GOD OF WAR. Mi dispiace che il monologo iniziale sembri scritto per tutt’altro personaggio.

• Le strizzatine d’occhio. Il film è ok, la caratterizzazione buona (eccetto che per quanto detto sopra), la trama ha i suoi lati positivi. Ciò nonostante, buona parte del film sembra un collage di scene scritte col preciso ed unico intento di strizzare pesantemente l’occhio agli aficionados. Non mi disturbano, anzi apprezzo gli Easter eggs, ma quando sono sottili e limitati, non quando ogni scena è sottotesto e riferimenti brillanti, anche se sono in grado di coglierli tutti. Individualmente, mi sono piaciuti tutti (uno in particolare modo, si veda più sotto), ma inanellati uno dietro l’altro sono risultati un po’ noiosi.

Una cosa che non mi è piaciuta

• Il destino di Odino. Capisco che il risultato finale fosse necessario per il dipanamento della trama, ma ho detestato l’esecuzione. L’ultima scena di THOR: THE DARK WORLD era stata geniale, lasciandoci il dubbio di che conseguenze avrebbe avuto il trucchetto di Loki: com’è riuscito a disfarsi di Odino? Dov’è e come sta il Padre degli Dei? Come se la cava Loki nell’impersonare Odino? Thor sarebbe stato in grado di intervenire? E come? E come avrebbe reagito Asgard? Alla fine, era tutto irrilevante. Viene tutto spazzato via in tre semplici scene, un paio di gag, un cameo e uno sbuffo d’aria. Senza praticamente alcuna spiegazione. Bah. E in tutto questo, Asgard se ne frega: praticamente gli asgardiani affrontano la vita aspettandosi che Loki faccia casini e dandone per scontate le conseguenze, a prescindere dalla loro gravità.

La figata

So di aver detto di non aver apprezzato particolarmente l’alto numero di riferimenti brillanti, generalmente intesi. Ma la scena che ho assolutamente preferito è stato il combattimento tra Thor e Loki nell’arena di Sakaar... o, piuttosto, le reazioni di Loki al combattimento, sia quando si scopre che il contendente è Hulk, sia quando sbattocchia Thor come un pupazzo. Deja vu? A Loki ha sicuramente ricordato qualcosa.

Il bonus

Ad un certo punto, gli asgardiani assistono ad una performance teatrale incentrata sulla “eroica morte” di Loki in THOR: THE DARK WORLD. La scena è molto breve, ma anche quello è un cast di tutto rispetto: San Neill è Odino, il fratellone Luke Hemsworth è Thor e Matt Damon è Loki.

Resta il fatto che la mia nuova interiezione preferita sarà “Zio del Tuono”.

I love every form of entertainment that takes me to an entirely different world, or even just another person’s world. Therefore, I love books and movies most of all, but I’m an extremely average consumer: I don’t usually care much about technicalities, and my “expertise” comes merely from having read and watched a lot of different things. I love both “heavier” movies and blockbusters and I never expect either genre to rise to the same standards.
I like to record my opinion on things, so I often write reviews about what I like, don’t like or is extremely popular. My movie reviews used to mostly go on FB, while my book reviews are on my Goodreads account. From now on, I’ll publish them here, too.
I try to keep my reviews as general as possible, but proceed with caution.

THOR: RAGNAROK

I saw the latest THOR movie last Sunday with friends and I’ll admit I was expecting a lot. Comments from other friends that I had read on FB ranged from

Thor Ragnarok is the craziest supreme fucking masterpiece that I’ve ever seen at a movie theater! (G.B.)

to

Don’t bring your girlfriend to see Thor or once she sees him shirtless she will honestly wonder wether the protagonist and you are “of the same species”. (C.V.)

Therefore I was hyped. And not just for the abs, I swear: I don’t even like blonds. I’m the kind of girl that always falls for the bad guys in fiction, anyways, and with regards to the THOR franchise I’ve had a crush on both Loki and Tom Hiddleston since the first movie. But I was hyped, nonetheless.
That was probably why I ended up being slightly underwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong, the movie is a lot of fun: great special effects and general cinematography, great costumes, good performances, and a story arc that’s not unsatisfactory, with an ending left open for the next chapter in the MCU. I left satisfied. But not as stoked as those comments I had read on FB seemed to promise.
Within the MCU (that’s “Marvel Cinematic Universe” for the uninitiated), THOR: RAGNAROK serves as a prequel for the future mash up between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy that’s set to happen next year with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and it definitely shows. We’ve always known that the Avengers and the Guardians belonged to the same Universe and that this meeting would happen, sooner or later, but so far Thor has been the only Avenger to show us worlds other than our Earth, and in RAGNAROK is now projecting us towards the Guardians at full speed, especially from a visual perspective. Expect a lot of color and a strong Guardians vibe from the whole movie and don’t be surprised if it feels as though Thor himself will seem to be channeling Starlord at times. But neither the script nor the cinematography ever actually deviate towards the goofy, explosive extravaganza that’s the Guardians’ trademark, and the movie generally maintains the mood of at least its first installment. Which is mostly a good thing.

That being said...

Three things I liked

• Loki (Tom Hiddleston). I did say I crush on them both, hard. Loki’s perpetual inability to choose a side and stick with it is getting a bit old, but I love how he always finds a way to weasel out of tight spots and I’m a sucker for smooth talkers, too. It might seem weird that he’s been the main antagonist twice, now, and yet he still gets to strut around and make trouble. But he’s the God of Chaos, after all, so his constant ambivalence is fitting and it also makes sense to keep having him around as a “necessary evil”. Hiddleston is a very good actor, which doesn’t hurt, either. Loki was the only thing I liked in THOR: THE DARK WORLD, and I still loved him here, therefore I hope he’ll keep sticking around for a long time.

• The stellar cast. The THOR franchise certainly set the bar pretty high when they cast Anthony Hopkins as Odin, but they’ve definitely kept on par with it. Although I didn’t like his scenes, Anthony Hopkins is still a God, literally and figuratively. There’s no going wrong with Jeff Goldblum, another huge personal favorite. He’s the man for any job: give him any role and he’ll make it compelling, hilarious, and just the right amount of crazy, which incidentally was exactly what the Grandmaster needed. Great performance and great make up. Cate Blanchett also gave a great performance, as predictable, and you definitely get the feeling that she had a lot of fun with it.

• Skurge (Karl Urban). He’s a secondary character but I think both the script and the actor did a great job in detailing him. Every time he’s on screen his mere facial expressions speak volumes and you definitely know what’s going through his mind, even if your not familiar with the character and he doesn’t have that many lines. His indecisiveness between doing what’s profitable and what’s right is not particularly original, but I liked how the character turned out, especially given the fact that he’s characterized very differently from Loki who, in theory, should live the same internal conflict (while in reality doesn’t give a damn about what’s right). His overall look is also rather cool.

Two things that were “meh”

• The beginning. As mentioned, this movie acts as a tie-in to the Avengers meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy in the next MCU installment (assuming BLACK PANTHER will be somewhat removed from the main storyline), and yet I don’t think Thor needed to parrot Starlord so much throughout, especially in the first scene. I don’t mind starting in medias res. I don’t mind the fact that the fight looks like the level my boyfriend just cleared in GOD OF WAR. I do care that that initial monologue sounds like it was written for a completely different character.

• The fanservice gags. The movie’s fine, the characterization is all right (except for the aforementioned first scene), the plot has its merits. And yet a good portion of the movie feels like a collection of individual scenes written with the intention of heavily winking at faithful audiences. Now, I don’t mind and actually love Easter eggs, but they’re enjoyable when they’re subtle and numbered, not when every other scene is basically all undertext and inside jokes, even if I get all of them. I enjoyed them all, individually (one most of all, see below), but they became a little boring strung one after the other.

One thing I didn’t like

• Odin’s fate. I understand that the end result was necessary to further the plot, but I loathed the execution. The last scene from THOR: THE DARK WORLD was genius and left us wondering how Loki’s trick played out: how did he manage to get rid of Odin? Where and how was the Allfather? How would Loki fare as a Odin impersonator? Would Thor even be able to intervene? How? And how would the rest of Asgard react? It turns out that that was all irrelevant. The whole thing is brushed aside in three single scenes, a couple of gags, a guest appearance, and a puff of air. With next to none actual explanation given. Bah. Most baffling, the rest of Asgard doesn’t give a damn: they probably basically go through life expecting Loki to make trouble and feeling generally indifferent towards the end result, whatever that might be.

Best scene

I know I said I didn’t enjoy the abnormal amount of inside jokes, overall. But the one scene that was definitely the best for me was Thor’s fight with Hulk in the Sakaar arena... with Loki’s reactions to it, both when Hulk is revealed as the opponent and when he smashes Thor around like a puppet. Deja-vu, much? Loki definitely seemed to think so.

The bonus

At one point, the Asgardians are watching a play about Loki’s “death” in THOR: THE DARK WORLD. Blink and you’ll miss it, but that’s a pretty impressive cast on its own, with Odin being played by Sam Neill, Thor by older brother Luke Hemsworth, and Loki by Matt Damon.

Also, the Grandmaster’s misnomer for Thor is pretty basic in English (Lord instead of God of Thunder). It’s particularly hilarious in Italian, instead. The translators probably realized that the Italian word for Lord (Signore) was too long to dub effectively and went another way. Since the word for God (Dio) is extremely similar to the word for uncle (zio), Thor becomes the Uncle of Thunder in Sakaar.
