Great tips! I hadn't really put too much thought into how the weekly distance volume and the length of the "long run" may correspond to a race distance goal.
The 1/3 seems light -- but I suppose it's probably true. I know that I've done some (poor) training w/ regular long runs around 15~20km for marathon training.
I think the long runs are more for your confidence...You do get a benefit from the long runs if done properly but for a new runner, it doesn't always need to be racking up the big miles just to finish a race.
