Rush Limbaugh, rest in peace.

I listened to Rush off and on for years. I enjoyed his show, his political insights, his humor – especially his humor. His vocal imitation of Bill Clinton was spot-on and hilarious. No, he wasn’t fair, and I always thought that the view he expressed about his people – Republicans and conservatives – was far more factually accurate than his take on Dems and libs, who he slammed on a regular basis, not always deservedly. Rush was older than me by exactly 7 years – to the day. And his death, at what I consider to be a relatively early age, therefore concerns me.

I know he was a very controversial guy, and millions of people hated him who rarely if ever bothered to listen to him. But he did think and say things that other people weren’t thinking and saying. And to the extent that he encouraged people to think about politics and the role it plays in our lives, he did the nation a service.

One last funny bit I noticed in the FoxNews article about him today. It quoted a lengthy passage from a speech he gave in 2009:

"’We want every American to be the best he or she chooses to be. We recognize that we are all individuals. We love and revere our founding documents, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,’ he continued. ‘We believe that the preamble to the Constitution contains an inarguable truth that we are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life, liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness.’"

It's a great quote, with one minor problem. The preamble to the Constitution doesn’t mention life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That’s a phrase from the Declaration of Independence!
