(1) "... is necessary", that is, it is not optional but essential to worship "in spirit"; It is indispensable, mandatory, essential. Any other type of worship is unacceptable.

(2) "... in spirit", that is, in my own spirit and not in the flesh; as a spiritual being, as a soul, and not as a carnal or material being. Spiritually, and not carnally or materially. Because God is not carnal or material but Spirit, a spiritual being. The carnal, material or worldly cult simply does not harmonize with its nature of spiritual Being.

(3) "... in truth" means "according to the truth." The truth of who? The truth of God Where is the truth of God? "Your word is true" (John 17:17). The truth of God is found in the Bible, this divine truth not being relative but exact and absolute.
