Hydrogen Emission Photography Captures a Solar Eclipse Rainbow
Ever thought of using the Emissions from Hydrogen and Helium atoms to Photograph an Eclipse?
This is a colorful eclipse composite capturing the chromospheric, or flash spectrum, of the Sun during the recent full solar eclipse. There are three exposures only, that have been overlayed to show the entire color spectrum. The far left is the Sun's "diamond ring" appearance at the beginning and end of the eclipse, when the only part of the sun visible is a halo of light around the moon shadow. To capture the brilliant colors to the right, the camera was moved by a fraction and filters were put in place. The brightest images, which have the strongest chromospheric emission, are due to Hydrogen atoms. Red hydrogen alpha emission is at the far right with blue and purple hydrogen series emission to the left. In between, the brightest yellow is from atoms of Helium.
