A breakthrough in the field of synthetic muscles can lead to "realistic" robots

A breakthrough in "soft" robotics means that scientists are now one step closer to creating realistic machines, according to the news of yahoo .


 Researchers from Columbia Engineering have developed a three-dimensional printed synthetic tissue that can act as an active muscle. A material that can push, pull, bend and twist (thanks to the use of microbubbles with silicone rubber and ethanol), is also capable of carrying 1000 times its own weight. Not only can the invention lead to the creation of super-strong machines (such as Terminator , which work in the field of production), but will also release soft robots from their modern bundles. 

 You see, synthetic muscle technology now depends on tied external compressors or high-voltage equipment. But robots equipped with this new cloth, theoretically can be released from this, they can move like people and better capture and collect items. This is very important, because ultimately this bot should help us in non-invasive operations and take care of the elderly - among other tasks 

 Researchers advertise the material as the first synthetic muscle, which can withstand both high-activity stress and high load. 

leader scientist Hod Lipson said  :

"We have made great strides in creating robots, but robots are still primitive" 
"This is a big piece of the puzzle, and like biology, the new drive can be formed and changed in a thousand ways. We have overcome one of the last obstacles to creating realistic robots. "

 After three-dimensional printing in the required form, the team electrically activated the artificial muscle using a thin resistive and low-power (8 V) wire. Then they tested it in various robotic applications, where they demonstrated a significant ability to reduce-stretch. Researchers argue that synthetic tissue is also capable of stretching up to 900 percent with electrical heating up to 80 ° C. 

 Based on their initial findings, the team plans to include conductive materials to replace the need for a connecting wire. Further along the line they intend to combine it with an artificial intelligence that can learn to control a muscle, the result of which (they hope) will be a "natural" movement.
