RE: TERRIBLE THINGS WHICH HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY SCIENTIFIC INVENTIONS

in #science6 years ago (edited)

I would recommend you do a little more research and think a little deeper...

The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was tragic, but did not happen in a vacuum. Japan had engaged in a series of conquests beginning in the mid to late 1930’s and culminated in the attack on Pearl Harbor, The Philippines, And elsewhere in the Pacific in late 1941, which caused million of deaths and massive suffering. The United States fully engaged and defeated the Japan of that time militarily and was poised to launch a full invasion of the Japanese islands in 1945, to force a surrender, which would have stretched the conflict well into 1946 and probably would have resulted in massive casualties and millions of additional deaths had Truman not made the decision to use atomic weapons.

The sum total of deaths resulting from Hiroshima and Nagasaki might have been 200,000, which is terrible, but no nuclear weapons have been used outside of testing in remote areas since then.

In fact, the prospective use of nuclear weapons and their known destructive capability produced a deterrent effect against the mass kind of warfare like that experienced during the 1940s, which has allowed many countries to flourish and contributed to a population explosion and massive economic growth in many countries since then, such as China, India and elsewhere...

The sum total of deaths by nuclear weapons, at this point, is a fraction of those caused by conventional ... Thus far, the invention of nuclear weapons has, ironically, made a massive contribution to the development of humankind.

Of course, there have been many conflicts since the Pacific War ended, such as Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and elsewhere, but these involved conventional weapons and as destructive as these wars were, they paled in comparison to the one experienced during the 1940s with Japan.

Certainly, we should fear the prospect of a nuclear exchange. Should one happen, it could unleash a tragedy that would probably send the human race leaping backwards by centuries. Let us hope that rational and responsible people continue their development of and stewardship over these important but very dangerous weapons.
