Trypanosoma gambiense is one of the species of trypanosoma which causes sleeping sickness in human and the sickness is transmitted from one host to another by TSE-TSE FLY (glossina papalis).
Trypanosoma gambiense are found in places near the rivers and lakes, and they live as parasites in blood lymph, nodes cerebrospinal fluid and in the intestine of blood sucking fly.
They have a slender, elongated colourless sickle shape and flattened microscopic body which is tapping In both stepping end. the anterior end is more pointed than the posterior end which is blunt. the body end varies from 15-30meter.
Their body is covered by a thin elastic and fair pellicle. the pellicle maintain a general shape of the body and the pellicle is made up of fine fibres which runs along the length of the body, and these fibres are called MICROTUBULES.the pellicle is screwed out into an irregular membranous folt one side of the body. this folt is called UNDULLATING MEMBRANE. the flagellum in trypanosome is single i.e it is uni-flagelline.
The flagellum runs first and remains attached all along the body making the boundary of undulating membrane. the cytoplasm contains numerous scattered, greenish, refracted deep staining granules called VOLUTIN GRANULES………. The volutin granules is metabolic food resources and generally consist of glycogen and phosphate.
