Cycadelic galaxies

in #science4 years ago

No somebody wasn't smoking something.

It's what you get when you combine different views from different types of telescopes to produce a composite image.

Approximately 100 million years ago, a smaller galaxy plunged through the heart of the Cartwheel galaxy, creating ripples of brief star formation. As with the Pinwheel galaxy above, this composite image includes data from NASA's Spitzer, Hubble, GALEX and Chandra observatories.

Great image, @gavvet. Unthinkable spans of time and space! One day, 4.5 billion years from now, our own Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda galaxy. There will be fireworks (and possibly cake)!
