Could The Use of Fuel Cell for Carbon Capture Be The Solution to a Cleaner Environment?

in #science6 years ago

This a controversial way of fighting greenhouse gas emission in order to reduce global warming.

The concept is the use of a fuel cell to pull CO2 out of the air.

The modern world could not sustain its lifestyle without tremendous amounts of energy being consumed. The production creates a serious damage to the environment leading to all sort of ailments that end up lowering the quality of life.

There had been renewed efforts on the use of renewable energy or energy with less negative impact on the environment. But in the end, the world still relies heavily on the fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

Fossil fuels made up more than 80% of the world's source of energy. This simply because they are better established, cheap and do not have the problem of intermittency (stopping or ceasing). The only problem they have is the harmful pollution and their negative contribution to the environment and global warming.

A Fix?

These harmful gases escape and degrade the environment. What if these harmful gases are captured and put into the ground? That sounds like a fix.

The idea of carbon capture is born. The older method requires the use of steam from plants to capture and store the compressed CO2.
This steam is also used to drive a turbine to generate electricity. This makes coal plants burn 25% to 40% more fuel. This makes for a high cost of fuel and an economically unfeasible venture.

The FuelCell Energy Inc have come up with a solution. This entails the use of carbonate fuel cell. The CO2 from the plant's exhaust is converted ions, then transferred via an electrolyte layer and converted back into CO2.

The FuelCell Energy Inc have come up with a solution. This entails the use of carbonate fuel cell. The CO2 from the plant's exhaust is converted ions, then transferred via an electrolyte layer and converted back into CO2

This generates electricity and increases the CO2 from 13% to 70%. The more concentrated it is, the more it could be better condensed. The CO2 is chilled to -40°C and channeled to the underground storage system.

Some added advantage

This process helps remove up to 60% of nitrous oxide that is present on smog. This procedure from FuelCell Energy Inc had only being tested on a small scale. There are still some questions whether it could work on a large scale project. The growing concern is some of the pollutants in exhaust plants include sulfur which may affect the fuel cell operation. This makes the technology more compatible with natural gas plant because of its cleaner exhaust as compared to the coal plants.

Captured carbon dioxide may be sold for use in greenhouses and forcing oil out of the reservoirs.

This fuel cell technology could also be applied to oil wells where gas flaring is illegal. So CO2is pumped into the ground where it forces oil out of the ground increasing the well's efficiency.

This has the potential of cleaning up fossil fuel plants.

Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, according to Bill Gates and the scientists working with him at Terrapower, nothing but a special kind of nuclear fission can help us save the earth in the next fifty years, extrapolating at the current rate of emission.

What this means is that we need a technology that is a cheap source of energy and clean and abundant. That way, burning of carbon becomes not only more expensive but also less attractive to consumers in terms of cost. Of course wind turbines, solar power, and other alternative sources would be there to argument the Terrapower source but ultimately, we have to get rid of carbon burning down to zero if we are to have any hope of stopping the devastating negative effect of green house effect and global warming.

And hey, anyone who says carbon dioxide is not dangerous to our earth should go inhale carbon monoxide, the younger brother, then come the next day, let's talk.

What you do here is magic. You take something not known and you make it known. Thanks for sharing.

@greenrun,

Thanks for the solid, informative post.

Salutations. I am JaiChai. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.

RE: Your Post

A little known fact is that the cement manufacturing industry has wrestled with carbon emissions for many years and are increasingly using carbon capture technology.

Why?

The industry has a larger carbon footprint than the aviation industry!

Upvoted and following you now.

Namaste (I recognize the divine in you),

JaiChai

You made some great points. A lot of industries are pumping this harmful gases into the environment.

Very interesting! It could be part of a global effort to reduce CO2. I don't believe we will ever fully get rid of fossil fuels since turbines and solar panels aren't perfect either in terms of production cost and recycling (not only price, but also environmental cost).
Fusion is an interesting idea, but still so far ahead of us.

I actually believe in a future in nuclear energy. Technology has advanced so much in that field, but people still have an idea of nuclear energy as it was 50 years ago. The CO2 production is zero and there is so much potential.

You are very correct, for the time being, we would still have to rely on fossil fuels.

This process helps remove up to 60% of nitrous oxide that is present on smog. This procedure from FuelCell Energy Inc had only being tested on a small scale. There are still some questions whether it could work on a large scale project

With more scientific researches, this might be very possible and this would go a long way in giving us back a healthier environment.

I agree with you on that one. It is just a matter of time.

Being a sucker for nature and its preservation, this one would be in favour of earth and us. I wish them Godspeed IN their efforts to make earth a better place.

We need to protect the nature. Nature do not need us but we need nature. Thank you.

Wonderful research
A good deed for mother eartg

Anything for a cleaner environment.

Greenrun in green house lol. this a welcome idea and it even help to stop the depletion of ozone layer.@theheralds

Hi @theheralds, the ozone later must be protected, global warming is not good for our planet. Thanks.

it could bring the shift that we have been looking to see from a long time

I hope so. Thank you.

if we can fix that with this that would be amazing :D
