Microscopic Hydrobots That Heal Directly Inside Your Body

in #science5 years ago

Newly developed hydrobots could mechanically irritate individual cells and small pieces of tissue. They are soft and fast at the same time.

Human tissues don’t exist in a vacuum. In reality, they are under many mechanical stimuli that affect their conditions but also their ability to perform the physiological functions they are supposed to perform. And when human tissues, whether it is in the body or in a laboratory, are under the right stimuli it can serve to research how different parts of the body function.

Selman Sakar from the Swiss Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and his research team developed microbots that are capable of mechanically irritating living cells. These incredible micromachines use artificial muscles and because of them are capable of carrying out complex manipulations at a microscopic scale. The micromachines are made from micro-actuators and soft-hydrogel robotic pieces that are activated using lasers. They can even have parts of micro-fluid chips on board. With them, the hydrobots are capable of doing sophisticated tests on living tissue.

Microscopic hydrobots have been developed as a great tool so we can better understand tissue. They could certainly find usage in biomedicine that could use them as miniature implants that will stimulate tissue at the right place in the right way. That way they will be capable of helping the treatments or even help prevent certain diseases.
