More Genetically Modified Human Embryos

in #science5 years ago

He Jiunkui was the first human to alter human embryo’s DNA. Many praise him and many critique him for his not completely ethical ways. Thankfully, some scientists have taken a more ethical approach.

One of the scientists who have taken a more ethical approach is a biologist from Columbia University – Dieter Egli. Egli uses the well known tool for genetic modification CRISPR to alter human embryos to alter a certain genetic defect that can lead to blindness. But, he destroys the embryos. None of the embryos ever reach a womb and get born.

Dieter says that if we truly want to use CRISPR to fight genetic diseases we do need this type of research. "We can't just do the editing and then hope everything goes right and implant that into a womb. That's not responsible," Egli says. "We have to first do the basic research studies to see what happens. That's what we're doing here."

Some believe that genetic modification is a “Pandora’s Box” that we shouldn’t even try to open. For example, they are afraid that the modified people could consider themselves to be better compared to “normal” people. Others are afraid that humans could literally turn into different species / castes as economical differences change into biological – because the wealthy would have easier access to such modifications – eventually turning the wealthy into a genetically modified aristocracy.
