Tambora, the explosion that has darkened European skies

in #science6 years ago (edited)

As I have written in my previous post about the eruption of Mount Sinabung that has flown volcanic ash up to some provinces, you can read it here.

So this time I want to review about the eruption of Mount Tambora, which has been recorded in the dark history of the eruption of the heaviest volcano, can be said, in the world!

In the spring of 1815 in Europe, unfair weather enveloped the sky of Europe at the time. Heavy rains and storms became the moment, extreme weather struck the earth. And it was caused by the eruption of volcanoes, known as Mount Tambora.

Another thing recorded is, when the first eruption began to sound, and it can be heard by people on the island of Java. An eruption similar to a cannon sound occurs every 15 minutes and continues to be heard until the following days.

Because the sound of the explosion was very similar to the sound of the cannons, the soldiers and soldiers began to move from Yogyakarta, because they assumed that their residence was being attacked!

In a note of Thomas Stamford Raffles it says:

"The powerful eruption of April 10, 1815, was heard up to Sumatra."

The eruption that brought the tsunami

When the peak explosion occurred, the tsunami also hit various islands. And that is the impact of the eruption of Mount Tambora.

History recorded, Sanggar region experienced a tsunami as high as 4 meters, in Besuki East Java tsunami as high as 2 meters, and it has happened before midnight, in addition, the tsunami also occurred in the Moluccan islands.

U.S. Geological Survey has noted, at least estimated more than 4600 victims were killed.

April 1815 was a dark year without the sun. Clive Oppenheimer call that as the "No Summer Year" in his article "Climatic, Environmental and Human Consequences of the Largest known Historic Eruption: Tambora Volcano (Indonesia) 1815", as Europe becomes dark.

The caldera produced by the eruption is now the largest caldera in the world, and it is located on the island of Sumbawa, which is part of the islands of West Nusa Tenggara.

May this dark history not happen. Many people are hoping, because, in the last few days, the eruption of the mountain occurred back to Mount Sinabung, which is in North Sumatra, Indonesia.
