Everything you need to know about Black Holes - PART 1

Hey guys! I am Rahul here and from today I will be starting the "Everything you need to know about Black Hole" series. This is the part 1 of it. Hope you guys enjoy. Let's Start.

Black holes are one of the strangest things in existence. That doesn't seem to make any sense at all. What are they? Where do they come from? Why they are formed? What can they do? What happens if you fall into one? What if one is present in our solar system? Today I will be answering all these questions in the most simplest way ever possible. Aren't you excited? Yes? me too. So stick with me till the end. Let's start:

WHAT IS A BLACK HOLE?

Black holes in simple words is like a ball having very small diameter x(very small compared to Astronomical Units) with very very high density concentration. Black holes too follow the laws of gravity. They have so much mass concentrated in a very small area that even light is not spared. Light is also swallowed by it passes from very close. Its gravitational force is so massive that it just swallows everything around it. Something like this:

 HOW BLACK HOLES ARE FORMED?

Now you will be curious that where does that mass come from? How they are concentrated in a very small area? What starts this process? Let's dive into all these questions.

First let's get some shallow knowledge how they are formed. Usually black holes are formed when a massive star collapse at the end of their life cycle because of their own gravitational force. So to understand how black holes are formed we need to have some basic knowledge about stars.

What is a Star?

Stars are incredibly massive collections of mostly hydrogen atoms. They are formed when enormous clouds of a gas collapse under its own gravity. The process looks something like this:

At the nucleus of start due to enormous gravitational force cause hydrogen atoms to fuse into each other to form a new heavy element helium. This is called nuclear fusion. In this process a tremendous amount of energy is released which in the form of radiation opposes gravity and therefore maintaining a delicate equilibrium between two forces. As long as there is fusion in the core the star remains stable. But for the stars more massive than our own sun the heat and pressure allows helium atoms to diffuse into other heavy elements until Iron(Fe). It is because the formation process of Iron do not release energy. Due to this Iron continuously accumulates at the core and reaches a critical limit and then the equilibrium is disturbed and the core collapses. Within a fraction of second the star implodes feeding more mass at the core. That's how heavy elements are created as the star dies in supernova explosion like this:

  When the star dies there are two possibilities, either it will become a dwarf star or black hole. It depends on the mass of star. If it lighter former will form and if it is massive enough later will be formed because of its own gravitational pull.
