Coffee-Oil to Power Buses in London from Today

in #science6 years ago (edited)

In a massive step towards the main stream use of biofuel technology in powering vehicles, London buses have been penciled down to use biofuels generated from waste coffee grounds, from today, being Monday.

A biofuel which is technologically generated through the blending of oil extracts from coffee wastes is to be combined with the fuel supply of London bus public transport system.

The technology company-in-charge, Bio-bean, says they've been able to generate sufficient coffee oil to power up one London bus for a whole year.

The Transport for London (TfL) has overtime, turned to the use of biofuels to reduce the level of pollution from carbon emissions generated by hydrocarbon fuels.

Is Coffee oil the fuel for the future?

Already in the capital’s 9,500 buses, biofuel made through waste products of tallow (from meat processing) and cooking oil is used to power the buses.

However, the new coffee technology is considered the first time that a coffee-derived biofuel would be added to the biofuel transport base of London’s transport system.

Coffee Oil Procedure

According to Bio-bean, the bio-fuel company running the procedure, Londoners consume on an average, 2.3 cups of coffee a day and create about 200,000 tonnes of coffee waste every year.

Arthur Kay, the Bio-bean founder says his green-energy company then collects the ground coffee waste from coffee shops and from instant coffee factories and carries out the oil extraction from them, in its bio-fuel factory near Cambridgeshire.

The extracted oil is then processed into a blended B20 biofuel, which can then power buses without any further need for modifications.

Bio-bean believes that about 2.55 million cups of coffee blended with diesel can generate enough biofuel to power a London bus for a year.

So far, about 6,000 litres of the coffee oil bio-fuel has been generated. This will be added to London's bus fuel tanks of the city's transport authority today, being Monday.

At a recent presentation, Bio-bean founder Arthur Kay told AFP …

> "It's a great example of what can be done when we start to reimagine waste as an untapped resource."

> "Instead of sending a ton of waste coffee grounds to landfill where it degrades and releases methane and CO2, we collect it, recycle it and turn it into a renewable fuel which is then used to replace further conventional fuels — so it’s a double saving."

Reportedly, the coffee-enhanced biofuel can also power cars, taxis, and trucks.

Meanwhile, Bio-bean has set its sight towards continental Europe, especially France, where about 38 billion cups of coffee are consumed yearly.

> “We're not saying that it’s going to totally replace fossil fuels overnight," Kay said.

> "The amount of diesel produced globally is always going to be more than the amount of coffee."

The amazing the 27-year-old Stanford graduate and entrepreneur is intent on being part of a broader and global initiative on waste recycling.

> "We want to see an entrepreneur going and doing something cool with waste from beer, or from tea," he explained.

Its good to hear that, changing our fuel source is something that need to be done but everyone seems to be procrastinating!

You are very right @th1nkfast. The bold step which has now been initiated by Bio-bean would propel a lot of technological changes towards reducing environmental pollution. Thanks for dropping by @th1nkfast

Save the world using recycle materials.

Yes @steemfuture. it is a very needed initiative on a global scale, which would save a world from pollution. Thanks for visiting.

Thanks for sharing! I love those entrepreneurs ! I will study social entrepreneurship and management after i finish my BA in Cultural and social anthropology! I would like to know how they collect the coffee waste. Are they working in cooperation with big coffeeshops? Also, how is food waste processed in the UK? I know that here in Germany a lot of food-waste and garbage is recycled or burned for elictricity or preocessed to bio-fuel. I hope you could give me some insight, sicne i'm not too familiar with british recycling. Anyhow, great idea and great post! Cheers!

Thanks for sharing!

You are welcome @embutv. I'm glad you found the post useful, and that you are considering entrepreneurship as well. Good call, buddy.

I would like to know how they collect the coffee waste. Are they working in cooperation with big coffeeshops?

Yes, they are cooperating with major coffee shops and instant coffee brewers in London. They collect the ground waste coffee substances from these places then move them to their factory for processing.

Also, how is food waste processed in the UK?

I can't really talk much about food waste processing in the UK. As i don't know about every food waste being processed. But for the Coffee Oil, i know there are two main methods used in the extracting of Oil from Coffee - The Hot Infusion method and The Cold infusion method, Though i suppose for the Bio-fuel, the Hot infusion method is mainly adopted. There are various online articles with detailed steps about each procedure. You could try visiting here for more on the detailed procedures involved.
Thanks again for visiting my blog post @embutv. I do appreciate.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer me in such detail! I will take a look at the linl. keep it up! Cheers!
