The Most Dangerous Addictive Substances Aren’t The Ones You Might Expect

in #science6 years ago

When it comes to dangerous addictive drugs you might imagine stuff like heroin, LSD or cocaine. But a research based on data from many large organizations shows that the most dangerous is smoking and alcohol.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean that a beer will hurt your body more than snorting a line of cocaine. But if we look at humankind as a whole the worst is smoking cigarettes and consuming alcoholic beverages. This may not sound like new news to you. But the statistics are truly alarming. For every 100 000 people that die, on average, 110.7 die because of smoking-related issues and 33 people die because of drinking alcoholic beverages. Compare that with illegal drugs like cocaine that cause only 6.9 death from the 100 000.

Almost one out of seven adults (15.2 %) regularly smoke tobacco products and one out of five adults has been drunk in the past 30 days. What may be of interest to you is the fact that it is the Europeans that dominate this statistic. And the numbers are probably even higher as in parts of Africa and Asia we don’t have the needed data available. And even if the numbers aren’t precise that do make you think.
