The Norse Want To Power Their Ships With Dead Fish

in #science5 years ago

Ships that use fossils fuels are the least impressive thing ever. But what about ships that use dead fish? Now that’s original.

Experts have found a way to create bio-gas from the remains that are left over from fish – the heads, insides, etc. This has excited a Norse company named Hurtigturen and it believes that using this new technology may be the key to lowering the negative effects of water transportation on the environment. Hurtigruten hopes that by 2021 at least 6 of their 17 ships will be using a combination of liquefied bio-gas and large battery blocks that will be recharged in ports using energy from renewable sources.

While competitors are running on cheap, polluting heavy fuel oil, our ships will literally be powered by nature. Biogas is the greenest fuel in shipping, and will be a huge advantage for the environment. We would love other cruise companies to follow, Skjeldam says.

The company says this move is quite logical as forestry and fishery and large industries in Norway and that leads to the creation of large amounts of bio-waste. This constant supply of bio-waste gives Norway – and other Scandinavian countries – an unique opportunity to use them as resources.

All excellent news. Of course oil is dead fish but‥ 😛

I'm assuming that “water transportation” means “transportation by water” and not actually transporting water itself.
