What Will The Next Supercontinent Look Like
When we think of the future we usually think about our near future. Like what am I going to have for dinner? Sometimes we even think about a bit more far off future – will we have general AI? How will climate change affect our lives? But some of us truly like to think long term.
And those people are usually scientists. And they asked a question “How will the surface of our planet look in 200 million years?” And the results show in 200 – 250 million years a new supercontinent will get created and it will be made from seven of the currently existing continents. The Earth’s crust is made from tectonic plates that are always moving. Though, very very slowly. Over time they drift apart and connect again and each such cycle takes about 400 – 600 million years.
Last time when the plates were connected was about 310 million years ago – little before the era of the dinosaurs – and that lead to the creation of the supercontinent Pangea.
So, how could the new supercontinent look like? The scientists analyzed the history of Earth’s plate tectonics and got four different configurations that they called Novopangea, Pangea Ultima, Aurica and Amasia
At the moment, the scientists think that the most likely is the creation of Novopangea. Novopangea will have its top made by Africa, Eurasia, and North America, the middle will be made from India, China and Australia the lower part by Antarctica and South America.
