Science For The Little Guys: Surface Tension And Colours

in #science6 years ago

Aren't school holidays fun! My son and I have gotten up to all sorts of adventures over the past few days and we have learnt so many new things together too! Today we decided to try out this little science experiment I stumbled upon online. It's a super simple activity that demonstrates how surface tension works to kids (and adults like me).  The materials/ingredients are super basic, but be warned, things do get messy, we managed to get food colouring ALL over the show!

By experimenting and exploring with our kids we can encourage them to ask questions, make assumptions, and then help them to seek solutions. As parents and teachers, it is up to us to help our children learn more about the world around them.

This experiment is suitable for kids of all ages, and all you will need is the following basic utensils and ingredients:

  • A round bowl or pan
  • Milk
  • Dish soap
  • An earbud
  • Food colouring

SURFACE TENSION EXPERIMENT

This is not a very lengthy experiment and results are instant. Simply pour your milk into your bowl so that it covers about a centimeter of the dish. Drop blobs of food colouring into the milk. Then you take your earbud, dip the tip into your dish soap and then touch the milk with it. Watch as the colours spread out to the edges before mixing and twirling together.

THE SCIENCE BIT

Surface tension is an interesting concept, like molecules like to stick together. Milk has surface tension, just like water, but unlike water, it is high in fat and is solid colored. As the dye is less dense, it does not mix into the milk unless stirred. It remains separate. Dish soap breaks down the fat of the milk and decreases the surface tension in milk. - https://familymaven.io/kidsactivities/kidsactivities/color-changing-milk-science-experiment-HHDLKzvlyUGfi6w-Y_hcqQ?full=1

My son loved the "magic" that he made and spent some time swirling the colours around and watching the mix, turning his once pure white milk into a brownish goo.

HERE'S A QUICK VIDEO OF OUR SHENANIGANS

Kids are never too young to be introduced to science and it is also important that they learn how fun science can be, and how it surrounds us. Hmm...wonder what we will get up to tomorrow!

Much love - @sweetpea

Love your post. It is true. It is never too early to encourage our children to learn.

I think there is not a kid in the world who does not like this experiment. It is really a lot of fun, thanks for explaining it.

Nicely written @sweetpea, I don't have a son, not married yet but i got younger ones though, I'll probably try out the magic with them

The experiment is so much fun😀. I guess I'd do with too 😁

this looks easy and great. gonna try this with my little guys... cheers
