In this series I’ll be talking about matter and the properties of matter.

Let’s do this!

Have you ever wondered what matter is? Is it simply just everything? But what is everything? In this series I will delve into what matter is and why it’s so important.

Matter is everything that takes up space and has mass. Mass is not the same as weight. Mass is the measurable space, volume, or density of things. Weight is relative to gravity. This means that mass will tell you about an object regardless of where it is and weight will tell you how heavy an object is depending on the gravity.

There are three states that matter can form into:

Solid, Liquid, and Gas.

In a solid, molecules lock together creating a durable form. In a liquid, molecules are close together but not attached to each other making matter formless. In a gas, molecules get excited and break away from each other and move wildly creating a vapor. At a time like this, I always turn to Crash Course. Here you will find a videos about the states: solid, liquid, and gas.

These three states make life possible.

Isn’t that amazing?

Matter is mostly mixtures of substances. Mixtures are either homogenous (bits in mixtures that aren’t distinct from each other) or heterogeneous (bits in mixtures that are different from each other). A homogenous mixture is a solution. Substances are that always the same stuff are pure substances.

A great example of this is water. Pure water, which is just H2O, is a pure substance. Seawater and the water in your body is a mixture.

Water can change by boiling out the salt in sea water making it into a pure substance. This is physical change, which is the effect of matter experiencing an outside influence (I swear, I didn’t copy that from a book).

I will go on to explore matter in the next post in the series.

Greetings, dear chemistry teacher Tanata

It reminded me of my science / chemistry classes when I was in high school. They were pretty cool.

I remember one episode of MacGyver back in the 80s / 90s that he had to do a decantation process to be able to separate some liquid substances to get something that was inside them. I do not remember what it was, but the process was pretty cool.

I remember he was on the beach and used some of his gadgets to make that separation.

Well, that's your change of posts.

Thank you and good morning!!!!

Great science and educative article @tanata ..The fog was fog and yet was not fog. it was liquid and solid, then gas, then a roiling putrescence expanding like a balloon blown with filth...

This is amazing research from you dear thanks a lot for such detail information your passion towards blogging is driving you towards success.your knowledge quality skills always high and perfect.just important tropic sharing in your blog..i respect your thought and i always appreciate your post.because you writing always perfectly step to step about science..thanks to sharing for your great post of science..very well.done.. my dear friend.. @tanata take care yourself and best of luck of your great work..

I Think you are science student, otherwise not possible to say this (I swear, I didn’t copy that from a book)

am i right @tanata ??
