A building that retains knowledge: The Natural Sciences Museum of Buenos Aires (II).

in #science6 years ago (edited)
As I promised in the last post about the museum, I’m going to show you some creepy but interesting stuff I found. This is the Malacology room (let’s remember it’s the branch of science dedicated to mollusks). In here you can find many species, from those we know best like starfishs to those who we (at least I) didn’t know it existed, or maybe we just didn’t realize it. This room contains a large compilation of native freshwater, salty and terrestrial mollusks, with large infographics and explanations about the different uses that man gives them (from studies purposes to foodie ones).

Take a look to the first part of the museum tour here.

At first you obviusly can see three types of starfish, one of them more big and weird than the other two; BUT if we put some imagination.. Is it me or the round shape and the blue color make the large starfish look like an eye? Mmhm.. I sent the picture to my mom and she asked me at the moment: "What kind of eye is that?", curious way to exhibit a starfish.

At first sight if you don’t pay much attention or think beyond with some creativity it looks like another boring museum exhibition without proper illumination and some color lights, but let’s put some flavor on this, let’s take a closer look to the species that are exhibited in here. Personally, some species look like they just came out of an Alien vs. Predator movie, if you're not convinced yet.. Take a look at this:

WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL IS THIS?!
That was my reaction when I saw it, then I just read the label next to it.
It's supossed to be some sort of "sea potato" (that's the direct translation from spanish).

There wasn't enough information on the label for me, so I wrote down the name of this creature and googled it later (specially for this post). So, it's supossed to be an Ascidean. The ascidians (Ascidiacea), commonly known as ascidians, are a class of animals belonging to the Urochordata subphylum. These animals are also known as marine jets, because they feed by entering water into their body through the pharynx, to expel through the atrial siphon once they have retained food. The filtering habit of these animals causes numerous contaminants to enter theirr body; Many of them can be toxic for embryonic, larval or adult forms. On the other hand, some species are used as indicators of water pollution They should be called SEA FILTERS right?

Here's an alive Ascidia
And here's its anatomy

Let's admit it definitely looks like a potato.

The collection includes material studied by important Argentine specialists. It is the most important invertebrate collection in Argentina and one of the most important collections of mollusks in Latin America. Today has more than 37,000 lots (most containing numerous individuals) of all types of invertebrates, except terrestrial arthropods. The mollusks are the main represented group, constituting more than 50% of the specimens. The main lines of research include the biology of the conservation of freshwater gastropods, reproduction of marine mollusks, ecology of benthic communities and the taxonomy of marine amphipods, terrestrial molluscs and bryozoans. The digitization of collection information is currently taking place.

Sea stars or starfish form one of the best-known groups of marine animals on the seabed. They usually have a central disc and five arms, although some species may have many more arms. The aboral or superior surface may be smooth, granular or spiny, and is covered with overlapping plates.

The asteroids (Asteroidea) or starfish are a class of the phylum Echinodermata (echinoderms) of pentaradial symmetry, flattened body formed by a pentagonal disk with five arms or more.

This one is Patrick the star like the Spongebob character.

Hope you putted some imagination to this and actually found this entertaining and educational. In the next posts I'll show you the rest of the rooms and exhibition, that in my personal opinion are the ones that are worth showing; the next room is full of bones but has nothing to do with dynosaurs, it's actually more recent and has some actual skelletons (not replicas).. But you'll have to wait for the next post to check it out.

A very interesting room and the first picture is definitely eye-like. Looking forward to more :)

That museum is very peculiar sometimes, there's a section of stuffed and disected animales that is even more weird lol

Now that would interest me!

Really? Well.. i got some Bones photos.. i felt kinda bad for the animals

It is gross, but that's how we learn. The Bodyworlds exhibitions are some of the best things I have seen

True fact, that's how we learn. That exhibition Is so awesome, so real that it gives me chills!

That ios some real cool stuff before reading I thought that was a weird eye in the first shot

Another one that agrees with me, thanks!
