SciFi Books and COVID-19
The imaginations of SciFi writers have sometimes followed an apocalyptic line. Such writers today might well be accused of "conspiracy theory" scare stories. They might well be denounced as "irresponsible" and "trying to mislead the public." At first glance, oddly enough, there has been a trend to finger the military - usually parts therein - as villains. The intentions of the military may have been very responsible and even noble: to protect mankind from a dire threat which could not be spoken at that moment, as proper defense against the threat was not yet completed.
For Kurt Vonnegut the creation of Ice-9 was the defense which was worse than any threat. The military project was so zany that Vonnegut was hailed for his help in suggesting that the military scientific laboratories might be everyone's greatest threat. Indeed, the USDARPA may be worse as an actual, alphabetical face of villainy than all the James Bondian villains, whether SPECTRE or CHAOS or other supra-organizational rogues, put together.
Dean Koontz '80s SciFi novel has been discussed all about, as it was set in terms of villainy in a top-secret, high-tech laboratory in Wuhan, China. Here, Wuhan-400 had been created. It was extremely dangerous, and, like Killer Bees, naturally accidentally escaped to run amok amongst innocent bipeds. The latter, immersed in viewing the latest on their smartphones, were easy targets.
Not too surprisingly, the suspicious among contemporary humans began to discuss "biological weapon" in regard to our own COVID-19. Some may have already ripped off a SciFi book that is thinly veiled COVID-19. Mr. Clif High appears to be a leader in one cohort claiming it is a biological weapon. He seems to believe that his info is unassailable evidence. Here, a typical coronavirus core is provided a sort of skin composed of Sars, HIV and Mers viruses, making it a triple weapon impossible to attack by a vaccine.
