With Steem-Engine Do We Still Need SMT?

With Steem-Engine Do We Still Need SMT.jpg

When I joined the Steemit.com blog site late last year I read a lot of stuff about Smart Media Token (SMT), I also watched some videos explaining what it is all about and how it was going to change the way things were done on a global level.

About a month or so after joining the platforms comes HF20, though I didn’t fully understand what all that was all about then I still had confidence in the system. Then the waiting started, moving of targets started, the almighty SMT was something we had to keep waiting waiting for but it seems that it was nowhere in sight. At a point we saw gloomy interviews which I didn’t know if the co-owners intention was for us to pack our bags and leave. Lol. But I saw a lot of developers doing great stuff and introducing new things that made it seem as if more oil was pure into the wheel and it started moving faster. I felt if these people are still here putting all the efforts daily, committing money, time and intellect then they must be up to something and I must stick around to take such opportunities as they come.

Suddenly out of the blues comes @yabapmatt and @aggroed in partnership with @harpagon introducing us to Steem-Engine. I say out of the blues not to say they didn’t put time and efforts into it, I am 100% sure they did, but they just didn’t bug us day in day out with the “should we or should we not” and “ifs’ and buts’” of the matter. They got their acts together and then rolled it out it wasn’t something we had to be talking about day in day out. If you want to do something do your reach and take action, not bombarding the promoted post with his view, my view, our view and so many views that people start becoming confused as to what the point of the matter really is in the first place. Lol.

Anyways, in about 4 months of launching the Steem-Engine website and the added new features they have put in place and keep working on, we can see wonderful things happening on the blockchain. So many tokens have been created on the website and all of them used for one purpose or the other.

New platforms are also beginning to emerge @steemcoinpan, @triplea and as I also recently discovered the @palnet platform, there may be more that I don’t know about because Steem-Engine is just making everything so easy and fast for people to kick start their projects these days it is becoming pretty difficult to read up on new things happening and keep up with them. The wonderful thing about these platforms I mentioned is that they all have different reward tokens and systems. Some of the things that are been argued about on the steemit platform like the 13 weeks power down, numbers of days before payout, bid-bots and others I am trying to understand but keep not sticking like linear reward stuff are already addressed on them and members are not complaining, at least non that I know of. Lol. They’re all still on the Steem blockchain but have created their own criteria of how things should work and the best part of it is that these new developments is bringing new people to the Steem blockchain.

There are many more possibilities that the Steem-Engine website is helping developers bring to reality. In a nutshell, the website has created what is releasing the monster ideas we thought were not going to be possible this year or even the next because we were looking at a road map that was under-construction and the target kept shifting every time.

Now to my not so much important question - “With Steem-Engine Do We Still Need SMT?.” I ask this question because suddenly I am wondering what is the relevance of SMT. Has Steem-Engine not done what SMT was meant to do and even surpassed it? If Steem-Engine has solved a problem that we might not see come to reality if we were waiting for SMT, is it not better to support the moving train and then focus on other aspects of the blockchain that needs work done on? Just my 2 cents thoughts, not that I am a blockchain guru or anything like that, I just think common sense isn’t so common. Lol.

Steem Engine has done some interesting work, but it's happening on third-party servers without a consensus protocol. SMT's will happen at protocol level.

The difference here is... a protocol level solution does not depend on a single entity to keep it running. While Steem Engine has configured so that additional nodes can easily see what is happening, and anyone can witness activity, only SE can validate activity.

Until SE transitions to a fully decentralized consensus protocol (any node can validate SE activity), we still need SMTs.

Thanks a lot @josephsavage for your detailed explanation, I was just thinking now can't the management of the Steem-Engine guys work together so that SMT happens like right now. I mean things are changing so fast on the blockchain level and I am thinking by the time we finally get SMT if we do get it, people might have moved along. businesses that would have loved to use it might have taken other alternatives. Cheers.

Protocol level development is completely different than app-level development. None of the code-base for Steem-Engine is even in the same programming language as the code-base for Steem protocol layer.

Ahhh! I guess we'll continue to wait. Thanks for the enlightenment. You are the man.
