Welcome to Lagos statue

The statue above is called 'Welcome to lagos statue' also known as The three wise men.

It was designed by Bodun Shodeinde while Colonel Raji Rasaki was the Governor of Lagos state, Nigeria in 1991.

The statue was placed along the Lagos-Ibadan toll gate. Due to the regular occurrence of road accidents along Lagos-Ibadan expressway, it was burnt down by some uknown persons in 2004 because it was insinuated that the statue was the cause of regular occurence of the road accidents.

It was later rehabilitated and moved to its present location along Epe on December 2004.in 2012, the statue was rehabilitated for the third time after it was burnt during the fuel subsidy saga in lagos state then.

The structural and cultural background

It is erected and placed upon a high pedestal to welcome people into the city of lagos. The statue portrays the image of three white cap chiefs in different positions, putting on white wrappers tied across their shoulders with their right fists clinched, thus the symbol represent the supremacy of the right-hand over the left-hand.

The figure on the right-hand side stretches his fist forward to the air, with an inclined fist a bit down, the figure in the middle holds his right fist forward while the figure on the left brings his two fists together, slightly touching each other in the air.

The Artist(Bodun Shodeinde) through this sculpture, depicted the highest honour that can be aforded to any one in Eko greeting traditon.
