Johann Peter Kellner, Preludium, g moll

in #secretsoforganplaying5 years ago (edited)

This is my entry for the secrest of organ playing contest, week 36.

I play the prelude in g minor from Kellner, the twin prelude to the C major prelude I played a few months ago for the Secrets of Organ playing Contest. I call it the twin prelude, because it appears in the same manuscipt as the C major one.

It is a pleasant work, written in a concerto like style. The musical material of the first few bars is repeated several times in different keys, a common procedure in the Baroque era. Even though there is no real development in the musical material, the different keys create variation and the use of the same musical material create a coherent whole. And that is what musical form is all about: recognizibility, variation and coherent whole. Variation in unity. Or was it unity in variation?

O well, never mind. I f you want to play it yourself, the score is available on my site: http://partitura.org/index.php/johann-peter-kellner-prelude-pro-organo-pleno-in-g/

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sample set of the Mascioni organ of the parish church in Azzio, made by Piotr Gabrowsky.

Would be nice!

I've thought about creating my own coin. However, I do not really have a usecase for it. My scoress are free anyway and my stake is not large enough to make it a coin to buy votes like you do with ORGANDUO en GIPHY.
PARTY is a great name for it though, so I'll keep thinking about a serious use case for such a token.

The opening of this piece sounds like the pedal solo from BWV 540! I’ve not heard this Keller before. Another one for me to play. Well played and executed. The registration is superb too.

Oops, I made a mistake in the title: its Kellner and not Keller....

The figuration reminds me a little of BWV 540, Toccata in F major and also of Krebs' A minor toccata (or Praeludium, I forget).

They were all familiar with each other and of course bound to be influenced and inspired by Bach. Kellner is very uneven in the quality of his writing. I like to think that when he was part of the Bach-circle the feedback and inspiration raised his level of writing. After that, his work declined.
But this is just an unverified idea.
I'd have to research the time of wrinting of the different compositions I know of Kellner...

Your gut feeling may be right...
