in #series6 years ago

Good morning folks, greetings to all

Warning that contains spoilers of the Cobra Kai serial. For those who think to watch and care about not knowing anything before, it is not recommended to read. For those who have seen, there is my analysis of the first season of this series!!!!!

A few weeks ago I put my impressions on the first two episodes of Cobra Kai's serial. I put them both, because it was the free episodes made available on YouTube. After this text, I watched the rest of the episodes (are 10, if I'm not mistaken) and recommend to everyone who sees this show. The fights here are the least important part in my opinion. I watched with the focus on the personality of the main characters and the secondary, which contribute a lot to the storyline. The producer and screenwriter, in my opinion, did an excellent job in relation to tracing the behavior and feeling of the characters according to the family creation they received and the passing of the years in their lives. I was very curious to know how the life of the character Johnny Lawrence was. Every time he showed up on the scene, he called me more attention than Daniel San. Gradually, I saw the image of the villain that the film mounted on it being deconstructed. I will focus my text on this dichotomy Daniel San x Johnny Lawrence, who has shown to be the strong point of the show

So, starting with Daniel San:

Well, after the 34 years, Daniel got married, had two kids and became an entrepreneur in the car business. I clearly noticed that Daniel has a self-esteem up there and can be considered inversely proportional to his ability to empathize. He is a correct man, works well, takes good care of the family according to his bias and trained his daughter in the art of Karate. Once in a while, some passages appear in which he remembers the teachings of Lord Miagi to deal with situations in which he finds himself in doubt. This is interesting because it shows how important your mentor was in your life. I believe, that Mr Miagi doesn't appear in this show for the only reason his actor died a few years ago.

Daniel does not forget in any way the confrontation he had with Johnny Lawrence as a teenager. In his head, are always opponents, therefore, the image that created of Johnny Lawrence in relation to him being a villain who always arranged fights for nothing has not changed with the passage of time. Every time he comes into contact with Johnny, he's been fighting (usually verbal) because he has conditioned his mind to think that Johnny is a bad person who is close to him to get into a fight. This causes the eternal warring cycle between them to endure, because, seeing as Daniel behaves, Johnny reacts and gets defensive, because, in Johnny's mind, it is Daniel who is causing the fights....

There's a scene where Daniel's cousin who works at his dealership hires two guys to vandalize Johnny Lawrence's car. They break the car first and then firing fire. This leaves Johnny in fury because he imagined it to be Daniel's idea (who didn't even know what was going on). He took up a motorbike and headed hastily to confront Daniel about the car. A discussion began, because Daniel was also armed with his "adversary". Their wife made them sit and talk. Johnny explained the situation and Daniel gave him a new car. In this passage of the car, they talked to each other and got to know each other and some things that motivated their old fight. They even talked about Johnny's ex-girlfriend who finished the movie with Daniel. I found this passage interesting because I saw how a simple dialogue can lessen the friction between people, when one understands the point of view of the other.....

Johnny Lawrence

Here I speak of the character that in my vision is the attraction of the show. Maybe I think that by focusing on the personality of the characters and he is the one who carries with him the richest story of all. A very sad story, say in passing (as the grandson would say).

The show shows Johnny having several flashes of his childhood. I imagine this has been done to understand how your personality was built. He is a son of a couple in which the father was abusive and authoritarian and practiced constant bullying in him. In one of the tickets, Johnny sees people training inside the Cobra Kai Dojo and is thrilled to participate. Comes home and tells the news to the mother who supports him. When it comes time to tell the stepfather, he suffers a terrible repression, as well as moral harassment. It is clear that his father is a guy "Bronco", without empathy to deal with the issues of the son who, besides having created bad beliefs in Johnny, strengthens them constantly, calling him useless, no friends, loser.... At this point is that the depressive diathesis of Johnny begins to be formed, that is, it is here at this stage of childhood that his tendency to present depression, as it is shown throughout the show, begins to develop.

Something I found striking about it was when he had a conversation with Daniel, if I'm not mistaken, and he talks about why he joined Cobra Kai as a young man. According to him, the father who had not at home was found in Cobra Kai, whose sensei was the closest figure to a father he lived with. The problem with this sensei is that he is notoriously a psychopath who has developed a technique of fighting and life based on attacking first and without compassion, that is, always be ready to attack, never hear the other side, do not develop empathy and always be cold and indifferent To the pain of others.

An interesting passage that deserves prominence, is when his principal pupil, with whom he most lives, says he is "dating" the daughter of Daniel San. By the time he says that, Johnny Lawrence calls him to a very serious conversation and talks to take care of Daniel's family because they're all bad. He's remembering and telling the story of his adolescence. He counts two passages for example, showing that he loved his girlfriend very much and unfortunately, they argued and ended in the last year of high school. He always wanted to be with her and never forgot. Suddenly, he saw Daniel hitting on her, hanging out with her, etc. In one of these scenes, he goes there to chat amicably with her after seeing them flirting on the beach. During the conversation, Daniel out of nowhere stands up, stares at him and assaults him with a punch starting that conflict with him. After the punch, Johnny Lawrence hits him as "defense form", since he considers himself an alpha male. Months later, Johnny Lawrence had forgotten these facts with Daniel, however, this one wets him with a hose while he is in the bathroom doing his needs. Johnny goes out in search of Daniel to settle this once and for all and Lord Miagi appears, beats them all (they were dressed as skeletons in this scene) and causes brain damage in a friend of his (Johnny Lawrence's friend). They decided they were going to define everything in the tournament. From there, you can imagine Johnny Lawrence's "Blood in the Eyes" by fighting Daniel San. He lost the tournament to him, but what affected him most was that he lost his girlfriend (Ali), who was clearly the love of his life. Looking at his vision, it seemed to me that the bullying practitioner was Daniel San. Jonny was someone who didn't know how to react to it and became aggressive at the time, making him look like a villain while Daniel was the good guy. This all contributed to being more of a depression generator.

That's how Johnny Lawrence grew up. He has no profile of a psychopath, however, was shaped by one.

It is very easily noted that your Sensei was someone very perverse. He put many thoughts and beliefs linked to abusing both himself and others, creating a life of constant violence for his pupils, because he used them as a "mirror of his soul." This reflected in the life of Johnny Lawrence, because the same quarrel with the wife (until separating), has no good relationship with the son, solved problems in the work with a certain aggression and caused aggression to himself, ingesting constantly drink alcohol, which is a Trace of who's in depressing process. In several passages we notice how he does not have much empathy for others, for example, when he starts training his students in the dojo and calls them nerds, of useless, makes derogatory remarks about physical difficulties of their students, etc. But what I saw in all this was not someone with intent to offend others or hurt someone. In this case, we see a person who was raised in a violent environment and has no other way of seeing the world beyond that medium. In my view, he was a victim of a violent system. Fortunately, during the show there are characters in his life who helped him deal with these issues, like his own pupils, who are from another generation and have a much more flexible education to accept others, making him reflect on his Acts.

There is one scene where he sees his pupil being aggressive with the other, without showing mercy and he begins to reflect on it. In another scene, at the end of the show, his student won the final fight against Daniel LaRusso's pupil attacking a weak point of the opponent, because he was with the dislocated shoulder and was struggling to fight. This student, seeing the weak point, attacks without mercy the opponent's shoulder, increasing his pain and winning the fight.
In the dialogue he has with Sensei Johnny Lawrence, says something like: We won, as you taught us: strike First and no mercy. When he said this, a flash appeared in his memory and he had an insight that showed that what he learned from his perverse sensei was being passed on to his students, in relation to dealing with others without any compassion, making them aggressive people. It was very interesting this passage, because it made Johnny recognize his mistake and try to hand over the trophy to Daniel LaRusso and his pupil, apologizing. This student, even, is his own son, who only went to the "arms" of Daniel San for having been abandoned by the father. His son approached Daniel initially as a form of vengeance, knowing that the two were rivals. Then Daniel became a master for him.

Coming back, I imagine that Johnny Lawrence, in the second season, begins to modify the training that gives his students, because, as a good person who unfortunately went through a bad life, has the ability to reflect and modify their acts and not to make the cycle of Violence repeats itself, bringing a torturous life to his pupils as was his. I'm in the crowd for that to happen.

The problem I see in relation to this and that encourages me more to keep watching, is that, well in the last scene of the first season, Johnny Lawrence is in his dojo, reflecting on these things and his old Sensei enters it. It seems that through the karate tournament that the Cobra Kai Dojo participated, he became aware of the existence of his old dojo and will probably want to become his boss again and continue with his philosophy of beating first and never having mercy for Someone. I hope that Johnny Lawrence can put an end to this conflict and end this philosophy implanted by his former Sensei.

The point I approach in my analysis is related to Vicariante learning. Maybe I write a post about it later, but, in short, is when we learn something by observation, that is, we check the behavior of the people we deal with day by day and begin to absorb it in our personality.

While Daniel LaRusso had a righteous, empathetic, charitable, kind and disciplined Sensei, Johnny Lawrence had a sensei with clear strokes of psychopathy, malicious, unsympathetic, aggressive, dishonest, etc....

This clearly influenced the lives of the two, because, one grew up with discipline, love, compassion and became a successful entrepreneur, with good family, knowing how to deal with money, company, work. Know how to solve problems when they arise, while the other solves issues with aggression, has difficulties to remain employed, has no discipline, is full of debts, delivered to drink, has no good family relationship, nor with the Stepfather (who always mistreated him, and in this case, it was better to cut the relationship), neither with his son, nor with his ex-wife and is delivered to the depression. However, this show shows that no one needs to be stuck with memories of the past. Johnny has many sad memories, but these memories can work as a learning and not as a place of residence!!!!!! You're rebuilding your life. He managed to assemble his dojo, after a lot of struggle, he got several students and from now on I hope that good things will emerge for him.

That's what I hope for Johnny Lawrence.

I thank you all for reading and I will be happy if you want to comment. I know the text got BIG!!!!
I highly recommend that this show be seen. It's very interesting to watch it and check those points in their personalities. The importance of the story of the characters in the plot is immensely greater than the struggles, secondary in my vision!!!!

Thank you and Good morning!!!!!

Sort:

I loved this series, I watched it on vacation- the first 2 - then subscribed and binge watched the rest on my phone. When we got home, my wife wanted to watch it and I watched it a second time. I read most of what you wrote, but had to start skimming a bit, because I have to get to sleep. I loved the part when the 2 were driving and getting along. I also loved that Johnny got to tell his side of the story from the 80s- which I believe someone on youtube made a video years ago about why Daniel is the bully. The trailers made Daniel more of an ass than he is in the show (though he has his moments). I hope the next season they team up, because we know that Johnny's protege is just like Johnny was and he'll probably end up with 'Someone new'. I didn't care for Daniel's pupil, I think he was forgiven way too easily for all the lies. IN THE END, I figured who the final 3 were going to be- the obvious final 3. At one point I honestly wasn't sure who would win(between 1 & 2) until #3 did what I expected him to do.

Bring on Season #2!!

Yes, man, Its call my attention to see the side of Johnny Lawrence history. Thank you for read and comment!!!!

I liked the phrase "Stop being a prisoner of your past. Become the architect of your future" It is totally true. I like shows that show the different personality traits. Thanks for the recommendation

thank you, man

This is indeed a perfect review I think if someone read this theres no need for him to watch the series.

Anyhow I wish I have the talent to make a wonderful review like this as I need it. I belong to another writing site where they give higher rewards to movie review blogs.
