"Alex and Laurel" for #StatueFriday - SevenDaysOutside Challenge

The monument "Reunion" is new. It was opened in June 2017 on the eastern stylobate of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. They dedicated it to the reunification of the ROC and ROCOR.

A bit of history:

The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA) arose in the early 20-ies of the twentieth century as a result of the revolution and the anti-religious policies of the Bolsheviks. Under the circumstances, the then Patriarch of All-Russia Tikhon recognized the ROCA as canonical. And in 1927, after the Deputy Patriarchal Locum Tenens Metropolitan Sergius issued his "Declaration", in which he urge papacy to be loyal to the new government, the canonical ROCA severed relations with the Moscow Patriarchate. After the collapse of the USSR in the early 90-ies of the last century, a gradual rapprochement between the two Churches, and in May 2007, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II and First Hierarch of ROCA, Metropolitan Laurus signed the "Act on Canonical Communion" declared ROCA self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church and put an end to the split, which lasted 90 years.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of this levent sculptors Pavel Zhuravlev Nozdrin and Alexander, as well as the architect Goran Dragicevic and the monument to "Reunion" was created, which is among the laity received the name "Alex and Laurel."

Two bronze full-length statues - the Patriarch and the First Hierarch, stand on the broken globe:

In their hands the model of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior ...

... and a scroll with inscribed words: "Love one another, live in peace and brotherly unity"

Earlier, the same monument was installed in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in New Jersey, USA.
