Unmanned Supermarket
I shopped at an unmanned supermarket for the first time today. It is in central Lahti.
This is how you get in.
Debit/credit Card goes into the slot.
This is where you pay and authorize your card for a set maximum sum.
Mail pickup vending machine on the right. Chiller cabinet on the left.
The rest of the cabinets.
You can choose any item you want as long as the total sum does not exceed the authorized amount. That's a 325g bag costing €3.09. Bought in the spirit of investigative journalism, of course.
When you're done, you can check out and get a receipt by inserting your card again at the same terminal you went to after entering the store.
This is the only one I've seen so far. It was a bit expensive and the selection was poor. Supermarket jobs aren't going away any time soon at least not because of this model of unmanned supermarket. The only thing the shop had going for it is the fact that it is literally always open.
This is so cool, I want stores like this on my city too! Would love to go on a midnight grocery shopping spree.
I've never seen a store like this anywhere in Finland.
Cool! Gotta check this out next time I visit to Lahti.
It's easy to reach if you arrive from the west. Just turn to the city center right before the radio towers. The store is on the left quite soon.
