Chapter 2

Upon her arrival towards the café, the morning’s calm shifted with kinetic gusts of wind; strutting neighboring tree branches and leaves into a chorus across a moment’s passage – like a brushing symphony encompassing the crisp autumn air.

The exterior of the café was simple and efficient. Painted with an earth toned beige with red chairs and tables scattered neatly around the parameter. The front glass window also displayed freshly made bread, castella, and other collections of edibles.

As she began to park parallel to the coffee shop, pulling up next to her was Emma’s car. She beamed brightly with a red scarf that complimented her skin tone as she waved.

“Hey fatass! ”

“B*tch please. I know you missed me.”

“Yeah okay Elise.” Emma smiled.

Cutting their engines off and trotting out their vehicles, they exchanged hugs and greeted each other warmly.

As they proceeded to enter into the cafe, the baristas welcomed them inside, whilst an aroma of espresso refreshed their consciousness. The line slowly dispersed as freshly brewed pots of roasted coffee stood patiently, ready to be served.

“One Americano and Earl Grey please.”

After paying and receiving their order, they seated themselves onto a wooden red table as a conversation began:

“So. First order of business ” Emma spoke first.

She looked up. “What’s on your mind? ”

“Ze dream journal for class. Did you start it? ”

“Oh yeah. I spoke to the professor about it.”

Emma looked surprised “What did he say?”

“I can paint it… instead of writing twenty two pages.” she smiled with glee.

“LUCKY!” Emma applauded. “How the hell am I supposed to write this stuff. He wants twenty two pages!”

Emma let out a groan followed by a heavy sigh.

“Pretend you’re the architect in your dream world.”

“Well, ” Emma smiled, “With my archetype, I would end up destroying everything anyways.”

“Sounds like a nightmare.”

“Bitch please.” Emma laughed. “Tell me about your dream.”

“Rain. Wind. And a tornado. You think it means something? ”

“That’s a reoccurring dream..” Emma pondered for a moment. “Drink your coffee and let me try to help.”

She took a sip as Emma began.

“Say you’re trying to remember a dream: if you try to remember visually, you’re recreating that memory in the present moment.”

“Okay..?” she moved closer to Emma, intrigued.

“Instead, focus on how you felt; like, what and how did you feel in this dream you had – because it’s those that make an impact onto you.”

She paused for a moment as she sank in thought and recollection. Then she turned to Emma.

“I felt.. like there was a peaceful calm,” she paused to gather her memories. “like it was delicate, undisturbed, you know?”

Emma nodded in silence, as she listened.

“Then this storm started to come. It wasn’t a big deal, but I could feel something else brewing.”

“Go on.”

“Like a disturbance; it was strong and unexpected, with strong gusts of wind and lightning. But I woke up right after the tornado appeared and the dream finished.”

“Hmm,” Emma looked at her in the eyes as she searched for clues. “That’s an interesting dream…”

“I can’t help but wonder, if there’s a meaning to it.”

“All will be revealed in time.” Emma grinned, with a sip of Earl Gray.

“Okay Socrates.” she replied.

“I prefer Aristotle.” Emma giggled in reply.

“Weirdo.”

“Loser.”

They both laughed out loud as their conversation carried on and as things settled down, they checked the time. It read: 10:45.

“We have to get to class” Elise spoke first.

“Lets go." Emma followed as she packed her bag. "I want to hear more if you have those dreams again.”

"You will." Elise smiled.

As they opened the door and strolled out of the coffee shop, they exchanged hugs and departed towards the horizon.
