Recap:

Meet Betty Suarez… she’s quite homely looking and begins the pilot episode at a job interview at Mode Magazine, a high fashion publication. The interviewer takes one look at her and says the position has been filled.

After the brutal letdown for the position, Betty’s sniveling boyfriend dumps her unceremoniously - for another girl. Meanwhile, Mode magazine is going through some issues of their own. The new editor in chief (Daniel Meade, played by Eric Mabius) is a womanizing philanderer, and at least one person in the magazine - the woman passed over for the editor-in-chief position (Wilhelmina Slater, played by Vanessa Williams) is out for revenge.

Betty ends up with the assistant position at Mode, however, when Daniel is caught dallying with his previous assistant. Betty gets hired and is immediately disliked for her homely looks. Daniel decides to do what he can to get rid of her by making her life miserable. But just when he thinks he got rid of her, he realizes that he may need her after all…

Review:

I thought this was a great start to a new series. The producers did a great job with making Betty look as… ugly as possible. I was surprised to see Eric Mabius (who also played in “The L Word”) in the tyrannial boss position. So far he is doing OK in the role. Vanessa Williams did a great job as playing “the bitch”.

The viewer immediately likes Betty despite her appearance because they get a glimpse of her somewhat impoverished life in Queens, living with her family. She also comes off as being quite intelligent.

Really I am looking forward to watching the second episode :)
