In 1860 slavery was not yet abolished in the United States (that law was not passed until 1963), but it was already illegal to bring new slaves from Africa. Despite this, that year, a ship called Clotilda arrived at an Alabama port carrying a cargo of 110 people captured in Ivory Coast. After handing over his human "cargo", the owner ordered the ship to burn and sink it to erase the evidence.

According to the existing documentation, Clotilda was the last slave ship to arrive in U. S. territory. But the place where his remains rested remained a mystery. Until now, because they have just been located near an islet in the Mobile-Tesaw delta. It has to be specified that it is not yet known with certainty that the wreck is that of this ship, but so far all indications suggest it.

It is estimated that between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some twenty million African slaves were forcibly transported by slave ships to the Americas. To make more profit, the shipowners of these terrible ships were trying to make the most of the space, resulting in appalling hygienic and sanitary conditions. The suffering of the slaves during these voyages was indescribable, since the ships could transport between two and three hundred people crammed into the hold, chained (most of the time in a horizontal position) and with no room to move. On average, it is estimated that 30% of slaves did not survive the crossing.

In 1807, the United States and England agreed to ban the slave trade and give slave traders the status of pirates. Spain did the same in 1815.
