Some interesting FACEBOOK facts - 2019steemCreated with Sketch.

Facebook currently has 2.2 billion monthly users to its platform. You can well imagine the kind of punch the company hold having that number of people going through the platform monthly.

It is now a powerhouse organisation that is known the world over!

In Feb 4th 2004, Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes started the site while still in Harvard university.

It actually started off as a site called "Facemash" which took the information from online profiles within 9 houses of Harvard, and then got the visitors of the site to vote on who is the "hotter" of the people shown.

The Campus administrators obviously didn't approve of the site and they shut it down, forcing Zuckerberg to look at other options for his work.
Harvard had the idea of putting student information and photos online, with which students could connect, but because they were taking so long, Zuckerberg and his classmates took to making it happen instead. These were called Facebooks.

The site was Thefacebook.com and until 2006 when it became available to anyone over the age of 13, it was only available to well to do students in the Boston area.

Did you know Facebook was actually sued for copying the idea from fellow students, and each of those students received 102 million shares in the company. I can't imagine what those shares are worth today!! Katching!!!!

But anything that starts to become a really big success seems to be targeted by people looking for their slice of the pie....Facebook was one of those. It also seems there were some shady starts to the platform....

In 2005 TheFacebook.com actually dropped "the" from its name, and paid $200000 for the Facebook.com domain. It is now receiving billions of hits per month!

Even though 68% of Americans use the site, over 85% of the users of the site come from out of the USA and Canada. It's growth has been phenomenal and steady! It really is a social media giant of epic proportions.
Take a look at the growth from statista.com

By 2011, Facebook had over 1 Trillion page views! 1 000 000 000 000!!!!!!

There is one statistic that is not in Facebooks favour however, and that is that its teenager base has dropped from 72%, to a mere 51% of teenagers using the platform. It seems the teenagers prefer platforms like YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat for their comms and social networking 'needs'.

Facebook generates 4 petabytes of data a day! A million gigabytes of data every day!

Every minute you have:

  • 510000 comments are posted
  • 293000 statuses are updated
  • 4 million posts are liked
  • 136000 photos are uploaded
  • 400 people join Facebook

What is Facebook worth?

Taking a look at the value from www.gobankingrates.com

Making Mark Zuckerberg worth >70 Billion Dollars!! That is an obscene amount of cash....woah! That makes him the 6th wealthiest man in the world.

Apparently each Facebook user in the USA and Canada is worth around $27 dollars a month to the company. I couldn't get the stats on the value for other countries.

With all this cash that was being made by the company, major expansion became possible through acquisitions. Some of the major acquisitions were:

  • Whatsapp for $19 billion
  • Instagram for $1 Billion (I thought this would be more actually)
  • Oculus VR for $2 Billion (a VR headset manufacturing company)

Now Businesses are coming in droves to advertise and use the site as a platform to further their businesses. There are now over 60 million business sites on Facebook.
I have personally used the site for advertising our band's comings and goings, and also used to get information on specific businesses I was interested in using.
It makes sense for them to use the platform for sure!!

There are many interesting facts about this powerhouse site. Some numbers and information are crazy, and others are just irritating. there is so much fake news information and fighting that it gets embarrassing.
But for the most part people keep returning and using the platform.....the numbers don't lie.

I personally don't see Facebook losing too much ground in the next few years. When you have a base of 2.2 Billion people logging on every month, > $13 billion dollars of profit a year and amazing apps and inputs regularly, then I think you can make it keep working well.

Perhaps you're one of the users that help it on its path?
