When conventional news does social media right

in #socialmedia6 years ago (edited)

I'm still recovering from the total turnaround of the Malaysian political scene, and I'm sure many mass media in the international scene are having a blast with what's going to happen in my country.

Those 48 hours right after the election are the hottest period for any election day, but for Malaysia this time, the almost upheaved victory of the previously-known opposition is going to take at least a week or two before Malaysians' life goes back to normal. So naturally in this digital age, all of us turn to the Internet and scour every major news outlet like there's no tomorrow. I have to say, though, that many of the supposedly major Malaysian news outlets have not taken total advantage of the power of online streaming and social media.

Save for two.

Amazing job by the Facebook team of Borneo Post Sabah, which has kept me and the rest of Sabahans on our feet with their breaking news posts and live video update. Just 10 minutes ago, this Borneo-centric news outlet posted an update on the former chief minister suing the current chief minister and all that skiddlemedoodles. Ah, too much drama. But I love it. In the critical 72 hours starting from the time the ballot centres were closed at 5pm 9th May, 2018, Borneo Post Sabah has been giving up-to-the-minute news and live broadcasts via Facebook. Imagine if I find it hard to sleep trying to keep up with the latest updates, what of the reporters on the ground?
For me, the shocker started not when the deadlock results were announced, but when UPKO announced that they changing their pact from Barisan Nasional to a collaboration with Warisan. People were confused for a while.
And then Jeffrey Kitingan broke his pact with Warisan to join Barisan Nasional, and all hell broke lose.

Second place for the most updated news coverage goes to BERNAMA for their non-stop YouTube streaming. They managed to cover pretty much ALL of the press conferences on the national level, and this is expected for a news-focused media. It was touching to see Mahathir being sworn in for a second time as Prime Minister of Malaysia in the ripe old age of 92 years.

Fantastic job by both media outlets. I'm still following news from these two sources, and will continue to do so for a long time.
