Today in Space-Time

in #space6 years ago (edited)

February 23, 1998 was a day in yesteryear when the Russians were firmly in control of who held parties in space.  The Russian owned and operated Mir Space Station was the optimal spot for any fit scientist who thought Earth was way too lame to do conventional science experiments.

On this date in history, millions and millions of dollars, or Russian rubles technically, were spent to retrieve groceries left in space. For the incoming Soyuz TM-27 to dock at Mir, the Progress M-37 cargo ship had to leave its port. This involved a complex set of maneuvers to put the cargo freighter into an orbit in which it could eventually be retrieved.  This actually didn’t happen too often that there were more guests at the station than ports. Progress was jettisoned on January 29th 1998, no pun intended.

At this point in time, Mir was no spring chicken. It was a 14 years old and technologically obsolete by it’s second birthday.   It had plenty of malfunctions on a weekly basis. Communication problems were on going, the bathroom situation was a nightmare and docking had to be done manually on occasion. Remember, everything is rather difficult when you are 200 miles off the ground, travelling at 17,200 mph around the earth and being bombarded with life threatening radiation.

I digress.  After the new crew docked, it was in everyone’s best interest to get the supplies back and re dock with Progress.  During this process, the crew lost camera monitors at key moments and were forced to rely on looking out visually obscured windows.  They also lost communications with each other and with ground control.

Alas, the docking was successful. But to everyone’s surprise, the irradiated, month old space food had turned for the worse while adrift. After one whiff of the garbage, the Mir crew said “Proshchay” to the forlorn freighter and pushed it into space.

What a waste of Space-Time in Today in Space-Time.
