PURIM IN TEL-AVIV, ISRAEL

Carnival during the celebration of the Purim festival in Tel-Aviv.

 A little history:

The Jews celebrate the festival of Purim, through the public reading of the Book of Esther and organizing costume parties.

The Jewish community celebrates the festival of Purim, which recalls the salvation of the Hebrew people before their imminent annihilation in Babylon.

According to the book of Esther, included in the biblical canon, in 450 BC, King Ahasuerus, influenced by the slander of his minister Haman (Haman, grand vizier of the Persian Empire, asked King Ahasuerus to kill all Jews of his kingdom because he did not tolerate Esther's adoptive father, Mordechai, not kneeling before him) had decreed the end of the Jewish presence on his land for the same 14th of Adar. However, the wife of Ahasuerus, Queen Esther, of Jewish confession, convinced her husband and the decree was revoked.

The origin of the word Purim, plural Hebrew of the Persian voice Pur that means luck, makes reference to that the chosen date for the destruction was cast to lots and that later the luck of the Jewish town changed.

From the Middle Ages on in Jewish communities it is customary to represent the Purim story in what is known as Purim Shpil and this tradition has derived the celebration of Purim as a carnival.

Los judíos celebran la festividad de Purim, mediante la lectura pública del Libro de Ester y organizando fiestas de disfraces:

La comunidad judía celebra la festividad de Purim, que recuerda la salvación del pueblo hebreo ante su inminente aniquilación en Babilonia.

Según relata el libro de Ester, incluido en el canon bíblico, en el año 450 A.C, el rey Asuero, influido por las calumnias de su ministro Amán (Amán, gran visir del Imperio Persa, pidió al rey Asuero que matase a todos los judíos de su reino porque no toleraba que el padre adoptivo de Esther, Mordejai, no se arrodillara ante él) había decretado el fin de la presencia judía en su tierra para el mismo 14 de Adar. Sin embargo, la esposa de Asuero, la reina Ester, de confesión judía, convenció a su marido y el decreto fue revocado.

El origen de la palabra Purim, plural hebreo de la voz persa Pur que significa suerte, hace referencia a que la fecha elegida para la destrucción fuese echada a suertes y que posteriormente cambiase la suerte del pueblo judío.

A partir de la Edad Media en las comunidades judías se acostumbra a representar la historia de Purim en lo que se conoce como Purim Shpil y de esta tradición ha derivado la celebración de Purim como un carnaval.
