Los Tajinastes del Teide

Hoy voy a enseñaros una maravilla de la naturaleza. Sólo durante un corto periodo del año, el volcán del Teide florece y lo hace con gran intensidad.

A finales de mayo todas las plantas que crecen en este terreno árido y volcánico florecen a la vez y durante un corto periodo de tiempo.

A 3000 metros de altura, este paisaje lunar, se llena bruscamente de colores. Conjuntamente echan flor la Retama con sus pequeñas flores blancas, produciendo arbustos de color blanco, algunos de grandes dimensiones (2 metros de diámetro).

También florece la Hierba Pajonera produciendo volúmenes esféricos de color amarillo. Junto a ellos, las margaritas del Teide brotan protegidas por las rocas.

Esta foto la hice hace muchos años.

Pero la flor mas especial es la que produce el Tajinaste.

El Tajinaste es una planta herbácea que produce una gran formación de flores, en firma de columna que alcanza una altura de 2 y hasta 3 metros.

Es una planta endémica de las Islas Canarias. Los Tajinastes rojos son específicos del entorno volcánico que se desarrolla en el parque nacional del Teide.

El Teide es un volcán activo que constituye el pico mas alto de España y que mide 3718 metros de altura.

Los Tajinastes rojos son muy altos. Superan ampliamente la altura de una persona. Muchos nos hacemos fotos junto a ellos. También hay Tajinastes azules que son mas pequeños y mas raros de encontrar .

Atraen a muchas abejas así que hay que tener un poco de cuidado al acercarse. No tocarlos o hacer movimientos bruscos que las puedan asustar.

Tras florecer la planta se seca y únicamente subsisten vivas las raíces bajo tierra durante el invierno, cuando el Teide esta nevado. En primavera la planta comienza a crecer y finalmente produce una gran columna de flores ordenadas en forma helicoidal en su ascenso.

Cuando las flores se marchitan se vuelven azules, aumentando el contraste.

Son todo un espectáculo que sólo tiene lugar aquí y por poco tiempo. La floración del Tajinaste no dura mucho, tal vez un mes.

Tampoco el conjunto de flores del Teide florecido a la vez dura mucho, tal vez unas pocas semanas. Hay que elegir bien el día para subir. Puedes ser que lo hagas demasiado pronto o demasiado tarde.

Si tienes la suerte de observar el entorno del Teide todo florecido y a la vez, el espectáculo es grandioso.

Aunque la mayoría sube por la mañana, yo recomiendo subir por la tarde. Al atardecer los colores son mas cálidos y las sombras mas largas obteniendo mas contraste y además hay mucha menos gente, teniendo menos problemas para aparcar.

Este año la floración se ha retardado y cuando subimos vimos menos Tajinastes que otros años. No todos los años son iguales. Las plantas florecen cada dos años por lo que es probable que el próximo año sea mejor. También, probablemente el hecho de que haya llovido tanto este año ha podido repercutir en su floración.

Para ascender al Teide hay que atravesar el “Mar de nubes”. Si hace un día nublado, hay que pasar por la zona donde están las nubes estancadas. Aquí la humedad es alta y la temperatura baja.

Para que os hagáis una idea del contraste térmico os comentaré que partimos de la ciudad de La Laguna con 20 grados de temperatura. Cuando pasamos a través del “Mar de nubes”, en nuestro ascenso, la temperatura bajó a 8 grados.

Finalmente, cuando superamos el “Mar de nubes” y volvimos a estar bajo la radiación solar, la temperatura volvió a ser de 20 grados.
Estos son los contrastes en Canarias, lo que llaman “microclimas”.

La excursión de ayer fue muy agradable. Volvimos muy contentos y satisfechos pues pudimos admirar el Teide florecido, algo que no todo el mundo tiene la ocasión de disfrutar.

Today I am going to show you a wonder of nature. Only during a short period of the year, the Teide volcano blooms and does so with great intensity.
At the end of May all the plants that grow in this arid and volcanic terrain bloom at the same time and for a short period of time.

At 3000 meters high, this lunar landscape is suddenly filled with colors. Together they flower the Retama with its small white flowers, producing shrubs of white color, some of large dimensions (2 meters in diameter). The Pajonera grass also blooms producing yellow spherical volumes.

Next to them, the Teide margaritas sprout protected by the rocks.

But the most special flower is what the Tajinaste produces.

They attract many bees so you have to be a little careful when approaching. Do not touch them or make sudden movements that may scare them.

After flowering the plant dries and only the roots live underground during the winter, when the Teide is snowed. In spring the plant begins to grow and finally produces a large column of flowers arranged helically in its ascent. They are a show that only takes place here and for a short time.

When the flowers wither they turn blue, increasing the contrast.

The flowering of Tajinaste does not last long, maybe a month. The whole set of flowers of Teide flowered at the same time does not last long, maybe a few weeks. You have to choose the day well to go up. You can do it too early or too late. If you are lucky enough to observe the environment of the Teide all flowered and at the same time, the show is great.

Although most of them go up in the morning, I recommend going up in the afternoon. At dusk the colors are warmer and the shadows longer getting more contrast and also there are a lot less people, having less problems to park.

This year the flowering has slowed and when we climbed we saw less Tajinastes than other years. Not all years are the same. The plants bloom every two years so it is likely that next year will be better. Also, probably the fact that it has rained so much this year could have an impact on its flowering.

To ascend to Teide you have to cross the "Sea of clouds". If it's a cloudy day, you have to go through the area where the clouds are standing. Here the humidity is high and the temperature drops.

To give you an idea of the thermal contrast I will tell you that we left the city of La Laguna with 20 degrees of temperature. When we passed through the "Sea of clouds", on our ascent, the temperature dropped to 8 degrees.

Finally, when we passed the "Sea of clouds" and returned to be under solar radiation, the temperature returned to 20 degrees.
These are the contrasts in the Canaries, what they call "microclimates".
