NRL – Canterbury Bulldogs Salary Cap Situation

in #sport6 years ago

As a long time Bulldogs fan I find the mess Canterbury of made of their salary as very disturbing and the case of gross mismanagement from former coach Des Hesler, former CEO Raelene castle and former head of board Ray Dib. The fact that you can let your salary cap get this bad in this day and age is quiet mind boggling. As it sits Canterbury need to release several quality players and bring in players on minimum wage just to be under the cap for next year. They have already had to off-load club captain and English international James Graham at the end of this year and this year will most likely have to shed the Morris twins, Aiden Tolman, Greg Eastwood and the rumour going around there best player this year Moses Mbye.

In the majority sport these days probably with the exception of Football and Baseball there is a salary cap and how you manage it is crucial in sustained success. The movie Money Ball starring Brad Pitt goes in to detail in to how the American Major League Baseball team the Oakland As took an analytical approach in to how they recruited and retained players, what they paid them to stay under the luxury tax and how they graded a players worth by using playing metrics and statistics. All though there wasnt a salary cap in place the As were capped as they simply didnt have the money to spend of the big clubs like the Yankees etc, they showed through the moneyball system they could be successful on a shoe string budget.

In the Salary cap age the NRL is far more equal then in the past where it was far more loosely governed, however if you make bad decisions with how you spend your money, who you spend your money and how you back end deals in the Bulldogs case you can set the club back 5 years. Canterbury now through there gross mismanagement have cost fans like me the chance at finals for probably the next 3 years..cheers guys!

At least they haven't got themselves into the same situation that the Storm let happen when they decided it was better to rort the salary cap than play within the rules.

Yes unfortunately the dogs decided to rort the cap in 2002 and had all there points and a minor premiership stripped then haha

Hasler did the same thing at Manly I believe.

It's about the same thing as current politicians racking up debts looking for quick wins while knowing it'll be someone elses problem after the next election.

Yeah Hasler left Manly in a mess as well with backended contracts.
