Gary Bettman announces an increase in the salary cap

National Hockey League (NHL) teams will have even more space to maneuver below the salary cap next season, commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed Monday.

In fact, the teams will have $ 3.5 million more than this season while the limit should be raised to $ 83 million for the 2019-2020 campaign. In 2017-2018, it was $ 75 million, and $ 73 million the previous year.

The Montreal Canadiens are among the formations for which this news would have the least impact unless there are significant staff movements during the summer period. This is because the team of Marc Bergevin already enjoys nearly $ 8.8 million under the salary cap.

Among the players currently in the Habs lineup, Artturi Lehkonen (with restriction) and Antti Niemi (without restriction) are the most important independent players to come. Agreements with the organization's tenors such as Carey Price, Shea Weber and Jonathan Drouin are still valid for several seasons while Max Domi has two years to go to his current contract.

The news is, however, interesting for teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs who still have to negotiate new deals with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, the club's rising stars.
