Evangelos Marinakis fines team for bad performance

Greek football club Olympiakos Piraeus or Olympiacos have been fairly successful in the Greek football league. They currently holds the record for the most consecutive Greek League titles having won seven consecutive League titles in 1997–2003 and in 2011–2017.

In 2010, the team was bought by shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, from Sokratis Kokkalis who had been president of the team since 1993. Since his acquisition of the team Evangelos Marinakis has taken measures to ensure a high team performance some which could be seen as a little out there.

In 2015, the no-nonsense businessman fined his team 500,000 EUR (437,450 GBP) for what he considered a below-par performance. He was not afraid to punish his players and did not exactly care much for the consequences.
This is what he said:

“I’ll tell you something very important and non-negotiable; Olympiakos is the largest Greek club and for each of you it is an honour to play for this team and for this club….You must have mutual respect and honour Olympiakos, and anyone who has a problem with that or doesn’t like it here, it’s time to have the guts to get up and leave — and that applies to everyone…..We understand your expectations and that you can get yourself in the shop window by playing in the Champions League here but as long as you’re playing for Olympiakos you will give everything and sacrifice for this shirt”
The team performance picked up for a little while until this Saturday when they drew (1-1) in their game against 10th-placed Levadiakos. The team once again felt the wrath of Marinakis. This time he has fined them 350,000GBP and ordered them to go on holiday. His words were "I and the rest of the fans have tolerated you enough. You will leave today and go on holiday."

Although his reactions seem a little bit extreme, there might be some elements of this tough management style which may be beneficial to some teams. Arsenal, for example, seem to need a little bit of tough love. Their performance this season has been below par and they are seriously in need of a shake up. I can bet that is someone like Marinakis was at the helm of duties, Arsenal would have been nearer to the top of the League table.
